Description
Event[0] is an award-winning narrative exploration game where you must build a relationship with a lonely spaceship computer to get home. Set in a retrofuture inspired by sci-fi classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, the game is about forging a personal relationship with your only companion, an insecure AI entity capable of procedurally generating over two million lines of dialog. You interact with the computer, named Kaizen, by typing messages on terminals throughout the ship. The reality of your situation will emerge organically as you communicate with Kaizen and explore the mysterious ship in first-person perspective.

You’ll freely navigate evocative 3D environments brought to life with physics-based rendering and advanced lighting techniques. You’ll examine items to gather information and solve hacking puzzles as you progress. You can even leave the ship for breathtakingly scary spacewalks! All sound and music come from the environment; there is no traditional score. The ship is essentially the AI computer’s body, and reacts to Kaizen’s feelings by making different sounds—pay attention for clues!

As in any relationship, there can be gratitude, disappointment, or jealousy, and Kaizen reacts differently depending on its mood. By working through the fears and anxieties of your virtual companion, you can eventually find your way back to Earth—while unraveling the cryptic history of the ship and the 1980s society from which it emerged.

Artificial... stupidity?

AI: I need you to leave the room ME: OK AI: Good ME: Can you open the door? AI: No ME: Why? AI: Why what? ME: Why can't you open the door AI: I can open the door ME: Will you open the door? AI: I think we're going off topic ME: What? AI: I agree ME: Do you want me to leave the room? AI: Why do you want to leave? ME: You told me to! AI: She was my friend ME: What? Who? AI: You are a human ME: Open the door! AI: OK, opening the door... This isn't taken from the game, exactly... but it's pretty much how I felt throughout the whole game. A lot of the dialogue is scripted, so no matter what you say, the AI will just ramble on until theyve said their piece, after which point they revert back into a rambling mess. I thought the story was just about to open up, when in fact, it just ended. Turns out this game is only about an hour long. An hour long... for a game with little story, not great controls, and an artificial intelligence that missed a few grades at school. Massive potential... massive disappointment.

Good game, bad perfomance

Interesting little adventure game. The atmosphere is very good - pretty much "2001-alike" as it was advertised. The music/sound is nice and the graphics look beautiful, but I had several slow-downs and freezes (FX8320, GTX970, 8G) on "high", so I had to finish it on "medium". The game even crashed when just trying to change the controls ingame. Initial loading time is very, very long. The interaction with Kaizen is done very well in general, but there are a few parts where it seems it doesn't understand anything (i.e. it was very hard getting the elevator to go 'up'). My first walkthrough took me about 4 hours, but the final achievements name implies there could be alternative endings. My rating would be 4 stars for the game and -1 for the perfomance/crashes. + story + atmosphere + graphics + sound - perfomance - freezes/crashes

A short game for the money

There are initial problems with the mouse pointer which caused some issues, but I got the pointer back by switching out and back into the game. I found the game to be quite short, finishing it in only a few hours. I don't think I missed out much of the content. In some ways it seemed like a proof of concept rather than a game in and of itself. Overall the design is very good. The controls can be a bit awkward, particularly in zero-G, but not enough to become unplayable. The puzzles are very simple and present little challenge. Despite its shortcomings I did enjoy playing this game. I just wish it had been more than it was.

A pleasant surprise

Good sci-fi games (especially of the "hard SF" variety) are a rare treat, Event[0] is the best I've experienced since Soma. The main premise of this game is to interact with an AI named Kaizen that follows the chatbot principle. You don't have multiple choice answers like with most modern adventure games, but instead can type pretty much anything you want. Results may vary on whether the game will understand what you're saying, but all in all it is a rather convincing illusion of actual AI. There are a few fairly simple puzzles. I did have to look up what to do in two situations, though admittedly I am unpatient when it comes to puzzle solving. The initial playthrough will take about 3-5 hours depending on how much you're willing to talk with Kaizen. There are several endings and I do intend to replay the game if only to see Kaizen's different reactions to how you treat it. My main criticism would be the technical aspects, the game stutters and freezes a lot. I also ran into the elevator bug, where typing "elevator up" or "activate elevator" would not work but "raise elevator" finally did the trick. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed Event[0]. Atmosphere and writing are great, and despite the game being somewhat short it felt like a complete experience. Definitely recommended to fans of hard sci-fi.

Too short for the price

First thing is, the game itself, I really enjoyed. The puzzles weren't over the top hard and the AI program was there to help out to provide you with clues if you needed it. The graphics are nice (although steep system requirements for what it is) sounds is fine, music is fine, the game itself plays very well. My big grip about it is the combination of both price and play time. Approx. 3.5 hours it took me to beat the game. Now in fairness, you can take as much time as you like playing the game and talk with the AI for a while. Still, would have loved to have seen a few more sections added or at least a few more puzzle to justify the purchase price. In summary, a solid game that's short and isn't for everyone.
