Escape Goat 2 is a worthy successor to the original. Though this second game boastes an significant graphical upgrade, the gameplay remains as solid as ever. The core puzzle-solving and execution challenges (timing and platforming) are as good as EG1 if not better, and the addition of new items for your mouse friend add some variety. Of partciular note, the zone waiting at the top of the fortress's spine contains perhaps the most unique boss design I've ever seen.
Just like its predecessor Escape Goat 2 is a great puzzler with only minor flaws. Apart from the graphical changes the devs stayed close to the original. They recommend using an XInput controller, but the keyboard does its job perfectly, the controls are highly responsive. Gameplay-wise the changes are minimal. 2 new useable items are are added: the tiny hammer which transforms the mouse into a metal box & the cloak of vengeance which allows you to shoot the mouse by 180° to the opposite wall. Furthermore there are some new boxes, e.g. crates that slowly burn once set on fire. Finally, the boss levels introduce a new creature (with quite an impact).
Most rooms are well designed, but the first ~15 are so easy to beat that it felt almost like a non-skipable tutorial. From then on the difficulty level is mostly easy – moderately challenging, but occasionally (not gradually) it spikes tremendously. The game focuses mostly on the puzzle solving aspect, but a few rooms require a great deal of accurate platforming & very good timing. Regarding the level design, the devs put the newly introduced stuff to good use & add the more the further you progress. Unfortunately, most rooms seem to revolve around 1 specific theme. e.g. if you find the tiny hammer, you won't need anything else to solve the puzzle in question. More complex puzzles would've been appreciated. Anyway, all in all the game is still one of the best puzzlers around & everyone who likes the original can safely buy it.
As someone who was very contented with the first Escape Goat, I was expecting more of the same. Not that I would have had any complaints, since the original was one of the best puzzle platformers I've ever played.
But instead the developers improved upon the game in every conceivable way. The graphics, which were charming enough in the first game, are simply gorgeous in this one. The animations have a lot of character, and it all retains that "Amiga Golden Age" look. Likewise the music, which was already superb in the first game, is even stronger in this one.
As for the puzzles, they are enhanced by new items that truly enrich the game. This is one of the only puzzles games series I've played where I've never gotten frustrated, and the challenges always feel fair. Even the boss battles are interesting instead of maddening.
If you are at all a fan of the genre, then there I recommend this game to you without reservation. Even if you're not a fan, this may make you one.
Thoroughly enjoyed the first 4-5 hours... after that it became impossible for me to progress because of the precise timing required, even though I knew what I was supposed to do. Game creators need to realize that not everyone has the reflexes of Superman, especially this genre of game where many of the players are seeking the satisfaction of solving the puzzles and not having to worry about constantly dying.
If you have the reflexes of Superman, a lot of time (and patience) on your hands, and you enjoy puzzle-platformers, go for it. For anyone else, buy Toki Tori (the original) instead - it is a far superior game.
Escape Goat 2 is certainly a looker. I love pixel art, as was used in the first Escape Goat, but they've done such a wonderful job of creating a new unique fantasy art style full of whimsy and charm. The puzzles gradually become more challenging as you progress further up the tower. Oftentimes you cannot progress up until you've completed areas to the left and right of the floor you're currently on. These areas include medieval forests, machinery, ice lands, secret labs, and many more fun locals. The puzzles rely not only on brains but also on speed and timing which adds a layer of frantic darting about with your goat. Your mouse and his/her magic hat make a welcome return to help you survive your many trials. Escape Goat 2 is simple in design but plenty devious, clever, and magical. It's a 2D game well worthy of it's place in 2014. Have a goat of a time!
