Fantastic indie game

Edge of Eternity was made by a very small team of exceptionally talented people, and the result is a game that's really special and stands apart from cookiecutter jrpgs. For gameplay, they went with a mix of tactical and turn-based combat. There are 4 difficulty settings and two types of battle camera, to allow you to customize your game experience. There are gathering, crafting, and stat customization systems. The devs basically made this stuff optional at the lower difficulty settings, but it can be rewarding and fun. The game's music is amazing, so beautiful and almost haunting at times. The story and characters are absolutely exceptional. The dialogue starts out campy for like the first 20 minutes to lull you into thinking it's "just another jrpg" - then wakes you up pretty fast with some shocking developments. The characters are mulltidimensional and the story will have you reflecting on its themes. The ending leaves you with questions, deliberately designed to get you to think about the answers for yourself. The characters are some of the best that I've ever come across in a videogame, and the writer has an amazing sense of humor. I've teared up from laughing so hard at some points in the story, and also teared up for real at other times. The voice acting is also great, which adds a lot to the character personalities. Have realistic expectations for visuals and bugs. These guys have 1 animator, 1 QA person, issues on unity's side, and covid memes. If you happen to be super unlucky and discover a bug, just drop a line in the official discord and the devs will address it promptly. Overall, this is an indie title worth backing for sure. The devs are hardworking and capable, and geniunely listen to player feedback. They also keep addressing bug fixes and adding content post-release. Even if it's not quite on the level of a big studio title, Edge of Eternity has so much going for it that it's definitely on my list of favorite games of all time.

Disappointing in almost every way

This game trys to be a JRPG, yet everything feels more like an asia grinder that forgot the MMO part. The characters are not very good, I think they have the elements to be interesting characters, but the presentation makes it hard to think about them as more as chesspieces. The story is rather dull as well, and we spent long distances of the game running around doing hunt quests and fetch quests, and the occasionally meaningful quest that trys to give this world a little life and depth. Even those just don't work out since, they all miss the final punch, or a suitable follow-up. Maybe those will be added in the future, maybe not, I won't find out, I played through the game and won't do it again. The world is looking kind of interesting at first, but that feeling goes away rather fast, since the variety is rather small. What this game is lacking, is a soul, you are walking around kind of aimlessly (well you can follow the little yellow dot to the next main quest location), you try to play the game, and it just won't let you. After finishing it, I was really diappointed with the ending as well, and they sequal bait? Not interested...

I liked it. Most of it.

I've heard that people better remember the beginning and end of a story moreso than the middle. Perhaps that explains a lot of the mixed reviews. Well, honestly I think the middle of this game's story feels like where it's the strongest. That's where you get a real sense of how close to the brink of destruction this world is. I noticed something VERY interesting here, something I don't think I see very often, and other writers should take note of: The characters talk at length and passionately about the problems facing the world and the problems its inhabitants have created, yet it's never an allegory for anything happening in ours. The voice acting really carries it. Getting all the worldbuilding requires doing sidequests. But they dropped the ball on the ending. It's like they had to cut out answering all the questions they bought up to meet a deadline, and hoped they could put that information into a sequel. And a thing happens that just comes off as "No? He wouldn't act like that". And the game makes a big deal about getting a certain item, but when you equip it it apparently has no special effect. Oh the gameplay? Yeah it's fine. There are some spots where it feels a bit grindy, and it kind of starts boring, but it picks up a bit once you start getting more magic rocks and moreso once you get your mount, and then more than two characters in your party. The optional objectives keep fights from getting too repetitive. There's a few spells/skills that just seem useless, and translation issues regarding "nexus/case" and some of the subtitles. You really have to take care with gem/equipment buffs, because otherwise Selene will just be way too slow compared to everyone else. The game also has that problem where people act like the world is bigger than it feels sometimes. There's a feeling of being unrealistically walled in by cliff faces, and the "continent" can't be bigger than 10,000km across...and most of it is apparently impassable mountains.

Underachieving

Hmm, this is not easy to describe. Normally, I'll spend some time with a game to get into it, get a feel for it and make up my mind, before writing about it (or even considering a let's play). For longer games like this, the usuall limit is at least 20 to 25 hours, to get a grip. However, with this one I really had to push myself beyond 5 hours and I've now given up after about 14 hours. And I'm not happy about it. The game was developed by a smaller studio and clearly shows. Indie games have the advantage of more liberal topics, storylines and trying out something new. In this case it means less playtesting, looks over function and - most importantly - deficiant quality control. I've literally gotten stuck on seemingly small edges, stones and sometimes in the middle of an open area with no other way to continue than to reload an earlier savegame. Also, the game regularly loses its track on the mouse and you can no longer turn in one or the other direction. This can be fixed by opening the map and moving the mouse horizontally to both edges. During combat, however, the map is not available and since you rotate the battlefield view with the mouse this leaves without sight of the enemies. This is a consequence of the looks-over-function aspect, with prioritizes cool looking effect and fast battle animations over actual working combat. Sorry, but that's a failure in my book. The small studio has clearly overstrechted themselves and as a result came up with little more than a barely working product. Actual gameplay is also at a disadvantage - almost all your time will be spend grinding instead of travelling around, questing, speaking with people and experiencing the world. During combat characters (and enemies, too) can get into a pathfinding loop, forcing you to kill the game, as during an action you can't open the menu and quite the game normally. And if you want to change the keybindings and think about using xmodmap, forget it - it will crash the game, hard :(

Hit and miss

Ah, another French indie game with large ambitions, that seems to just not reach half of what they wanted to do or promised during the kickstarter. Rather than being hit OR miss, this game is both hit AND miss, hence, 3/5 stars. For me, the most important points of contention are the story and the gameplay. Other people like to focus on the graphical and audio side of the game, but I have little problems with that. In any case, the story: heavily inspired by JRPGs like Final Fantasy, Xenoblade Chronicles, and othhers, but without many of the typical tropes that usually come with JRPGs when developed by actual Japanese companies. Overall, not necessarily bad, but the pacing is all over the place, and many of the plot points are not finished at the end of the game. I really liked the story; but it took a long while to get into it. In between story beats, you will either be roaming the overworld (which is a combination of extremely flat and boring grass-fields, and massive structures surrounding said grassy fields that you never look at or interact with), or stuck in one of the many tedious battles, which, unfortunately, are slow as hell... Which brings me to the gameplay: for a large part of the game, you can never make full use of the battle system, because you lack party members. The additional members come farrr too late. Only then is when I actually started enjoying the battles (although the enemies still are massive HP-sponges). Many of the other mechanics outside of battles are overly complicated, and/or unneccesary (looking at you, crafting... that is SUCH a slog) Of course, there are other things, but most of these can be chalked up to it being the product of a small indie studio, so I feel I cannot be too strict in that regard. So: keep your expectations in check, buy at sale, and see for yourself.
