Description
ECHELON is the code name for a top secret military facility located near Isis, a newly discovered planet at the edge of our solar system. ECHELON was established by the International Space Federation (ISF) to protect shipping and mining operations from attack by renegade pirate vessels who have terrorized commerce in the area and are beginning to gain an upper hand.

Your orders are to report to ECHELON to be trained to operate the 21st Century's most advanced spacecraft, the C-104 Light Cruiser, code named TOMAHAWK. This patrol vessel has been designed specifically for planetary exploration and is equipped with the latest technology in weapons and scientific equipment.

Once you're given the command of a C-104, you'll be stationed in a vast territory known as Patrol Zone 106. While on patrol, you'll discover thousands of objects and structures to explore on the planet's surface. Through the retrieval of "high resolution" artifacts (over 240) that can be transported aboard your spacecraft, you'll search for the solution to a series of mysterious and puzzling events happening in this area. A word of advice, you're not the first pilot to have this assignment. Use caution or it may be your last!

Features:
  • Explore the ruins of an ancient civilization!
  • Decipher secret code!
  • Search for missing persons!
  • Discover the secrets of the temple!
  • There are three different ways to play: 1. Scientific - focused on exploration without being attacked, 2. Patrol - exploring the unknown while encountering enemy spacecraft, 3. Military - non-stop action facing hostile enemies

A Great Game in It's Time! (1988)

I first played this game on a Commodore 64 in 1989. It was one of those games I spent nearly as much time playing *with* as actually playing--that is, trying to figure out how it worked, making a few crude maps of my own, etc. With all the countless games I had for that machine, there were a vast number that I started, got bored with, and tossed aside without a second thought. This is one of the few long-playing games that I played to the end, and was aftward at a loss for something to do. That in itself says "FIVE STARS" for this game! For the price, I will absolutely replay this gem! MODERN GAMERS, please note: this game originated during the age of the 8-bit machine. If you weren't even born back then, don't expect to enjoy playing Echelon as much as someone--like myself--who can remember when four-banger calculators were high-tech. On the other hand, if you're interested in historical computer/gaming stuff, this is definitely one for your collection.

OMG Blast from the past.

I Played the original back in the day on a 1984ish PC<4.77mhz/XT<8mhz custom build with CGA/Hercules monochrome graphics. Both had physical switches for which graphics to use and which processor speed. 640Kb Ram, 80Mb hard card(hard drive on an expansion card) This is a 5 star for nostalgia. Its also the last game I played on that machine before i dismantled it for recycling around 2004. It was cutting edge for its day including voice synthesis for the craft. Do realize it is a game from 1988 so don't expect too much. For myself instant buy. The minimum requirements listed above are thousands of times what the software was originally designed to run on.

Ah, nostalgia at its finest.

Ahhh, the "Great Graph Paper Shortage of 1988." The hours I would spend playing this game and trying to decipher the clues to the mystery while fighting off pirate craft at the same time... never mind drawing as faithful a map as I could manager. Echelon was a pretty strange beast in those days: a cross-genre game decades before crossing genres became a thing. In this case, it was a puzzle game and a combat flight simulator. While fighting pirate craft was a regular occurence, the largest part of my time was drawing maps on graph paper and looking for artifact clues that eventually led to the coordinates of the pirates' base. Now, this is nothing close to the complexity and spectacle of today's games, but if you are from a similar generation as myself, and remember this game, it's well worth the (very modest) expense to have a little nostalgia in your life.

Access Software

Hi, Everyone. This made it to the Commodore Amiga at the time. It was enhanced by a headset called the "Lipsync", where you could train your machine to recognise your voice and commands like "Fire". Access Software was an amazing company, made very famous by the Carver Brothers, that seemed to just know how to Gamify any topic. Leaderboard series, Raid Over Moscow (Available as Retroware, a port is okay, but not a touch on the original). Beach Head and Beach Head 2 (A really nice port for PC exists for Beach Head). Some may remember the publisher US GOLD that was tied to all these wonderful US titles. At the time it seemed the US had the best coders on the C64. Please if anyone knows of one, but I can't recall a terrible Carver Brothers Game. Love these walks down memory lane. We don't grow older, just wiser and more nostalgic - ME.

Pure Nostalgia

Played this on Apple IIc! I think graphically, that was one of the worst versions, but for some reason still loved this game. As a kid, didn't get very far until I dedicated myself to the task of breaking the (relatively simple) code used for the alien language bits. Felt like an accomplishment and had a lot of fun finishing the game after that. No idea if this holds up today, but for its time it was unparalleled in terms of what it offered for exploration. Yes, Elite was a thing, but Echelon wasn't procedurally generated. You were exploring a crafted experience with real puzzles to decipher and unlock. It was a great experience in its time.
