An excellent foray into the year 2150
Though I was completely unaware of it's existence when it first came out, I am glad to say I finally got to experience it. The game stands out amongst others for its distinct atmosphere, but also some intriguing game elements. For the most part, it plays like any solid RTS, but manages to set itself apart with just how you can affect it. The game allows you to customize your units, equipping them in different ways for different combat roles. A research tree is still present, but the game doesn't bog you down with it, and it is very subtle in its implementation, with individual buildings controlling other research stations, and doesn't require a ton of building on your part to get them to their maximum efficiency. Upgrades behave in the same manner, but are a bit more heavy on player choice. Base building and management also has its special features. Rather than going through a linear sequence of missions, rebuilding a new base each time, you design a home base, and can use it to ferry units to the current mission you are in, allowing you to go without an away base, should you desire it. However, a mission base can still be constructed but it will only be around for the current mission and is lost afterwards. In my opinion, this style makes quite a bit more sense than the constant rebuilding of a main base, with resetting research and mission only upgrading. On top of that, you can always pull units out of a mission if you need to and return to the home base, saving your units for another fight. The away base may be lost, but at least your army isn't. The A.I. can hold it's own for the most part and does a good job fighting you. It regularly patrols and usually can put up a decent fight. Other than that though, there isn't anything else that sticks out about it. In short, if you like a challenging, atmospheric real time strategy with a slightly more realistic take on mission deployments, research, customization and upgrades, and set in a Sci Fi world, then this is worth your money.
