Great Game

Make sure to note the date on the bad reviews, the game does not seem to be unfinished at all to me. Maybe 4 years ago it was, I don't know. I never played the earlier versions of the game, so I chose to get this one, and I think it is pretty fun. It is similar to HOMM, but different enough that I think it stands on it's own. The turn based combat is similar to other games, but there are no mines or resources on the map, you must take territory to gain the resources in that region. Thanks GOG for all the great games. I would not have been aware of this one if it were not for you.

Garbage

After finishing the first shard you get Access Violation and that's it. The workaround (which is ridiculous by the way) doesn't work.

the second eador genesis

the game is mostly a 3d remake of eador genesis pro everything went 3d and looks better, better sound, somewhat improved mechanics. con moves slower, took a lot of patches to get it somewhat right, for me the clear laid town of genesis became a maze I can't stomach, with endless radial menues. the thing is with an average of 100 maps to win on a playthrough and dozens of buildings to build .... the wasted time on menues is a no-no for me. add to that the 3d troop fights that take to much time as well. ps I would give genesis 10 stars if posible. to me anything that went from poligons to 3d from panzer general to fantasy wars etc did not add anything to the game, quite the opposite. it takes hundreds of moves per game and you will not waste time admiring the pointy sticks.

Great game

Many critics of this game have been so based upon the performance of the game itself, there are an occasional CTD, it is a shame. Performance, I believe the art and animations have been given sufficient time & attention to warrant the need of additional horse power. The story is intriguing, some voice acting would be great, the strategy layer is novel, the tactical battles maybe a little repetitive but you can hone your strategy to perform just the decisive ones. Lots of marvellous creatures, critters and monsters, all well detailed and described. Any future iterations I would be keen to see as an enhancement of this idea itself as opposed to a radical change in direction. I get the impression the developers have worked hard on the product and it may have been a pleasure for them, but I must deduct 2 stars for the CTD's, It has been marketed in the professional space.

Subtle and Satisfying

Having never played Genesis, I came to this game with the HOMM series as my reference point. Compared with HOMM, I've found Eador to be a more richly rewarding play experience--both its economy and its tactical combat possess a depth and subtleness that the HOMM formula lacks. Eador offers much more interesting choices in terms of hero advancement, army composition, stronghold building and kingdom management--in particular, I vastly prefer exploring and building up my provinces in Eador to running in endless loops trying to harvest resources and defend resource nodes in HOMM. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that the lack of different playable factions means that the play experience takes on a visual sameness after a while compared with the variety offered by the different races/factions in HOMM. In Eador, rather, the variety of play experience is provided by your choice of hero and of alignment (good/evil)--each of the four basic hero types plays very differently, requiring different stronghold builds, army builds, and battlefield tactics. Graphics are only passable, but overall a great game!
