Ravenloft: Strahd's Possession
Cordial Greetings from Count Strahd Von Zarovich, Lord of Barovia

For many travellers, I have naught but contempt and slight regard, entering Barovia as they do in timid apprehension of her wonders. They are neither prepared for life high in the Balinoks, nor ready to accept its dangers. Here, the peaks of Baratak and Ghakis stand in cloaks of granite, their cowls of snow pulled securely about them as if they alone might endure the ancient night.

However, your party intrigues me. Perhaps the harsh cut of the wind or a storm in the forest does not alarm you. If that is so, I am certain our woods, streams and caverns will attract your interest, offering many a delightful diversion. Even the otherwise abysmal village of Barovia boasts a charming cemetery. You must visit it. Perhaps, if your party survives... that is, stays long enough in this harsh and unyielding home of mine, I may require its presence. I shall ask you to join me in Ravenloft, my castle upon the precipice overlooking Barovia. It is not an invitation to be refused.

I give my leave for your party to enjoy our misty, twilight dangers. Let you challenge your wits and fighting skills; may the perilous magics of my land enchant them. But heed this warning and do not play at cross-purposes with me. To stand against Strahd is to be at odds with life itself, for he who sends these greetings is the Lord and the Law of this brutal paradise.

With Gentle Regards,

Count Strahd Von Zarovich
Lord of Barovia

Ravenloft: Stone Prophet

The desert of Har'Akir is ancient beyond belief. Not all of its past is marked by noble deeds and great kings. In ancient days, the evil pharaoh Anhktepot ruled a great and powerful nation. His downfall stemmed from his desire for immortality. Cursed by Ra, the sun god, Anhktepot's soul still remains in his mummified form and brings death to those it touches at night.

Stone Prophet, begins when your characters become trapped in a wasteland haunted by unnatural creatures, fierce sand storms, and cursed villagers afflicted by a horrible rotting disease. Your party's only hope of escape is to follow the advice of a blind seer and seek out the Stone Prophet, a huge, hieroglyphic wall hidden deep within a mysterious obelisk. Some say the writings on the wall, when deciphered, may lead the party to freedom... or to death. One thing is certain, a great conflict has been foreseen, and the mummy lord is gathering his forces.
  • Enjoy the lore and depth of a Dungeons & Dragons adventure in a gothic and Egyptian setting
  • Assemble your party and make your way across terrain and through dungeons, using weaponry, magic, brains and brawn
  • Fight a wide array of horrific creatures and rid Barovia and Har'Akir of the evil manifestations

Atmospheric Fun, Make a Cleric

These games both have a unique flavor in the dungeon crawl genre, as well as solid mechanics and nice stories. The map and note system are praiseworthy- making dungeon crawling accessible to new players and people who don't want to make their own maps, but with dungeons tough enough to please a the veteran. It might behoove you to glance at a guide or two though, because there are missable/displaceable items that you NEED to finish the game. When I got to the end of Strahd for example, there was a book I needed to end the game after defeating the final boss- couldn't find it anywhere. Nonetheless these are both good fun, you can transport your two characters (and the items in their inventories that aren't held in boxes/bags) from Strahd to Stone for an added value. One piece of advice though- make one of your starting characters a Cleric, or a multi-class with Cleric. You will need the healing and other abilities, you don't find an NPC Cleric until relatively late-game in Strahd, and you only have 1 chance to recruit him. There are plenty of health potions lying around if you decide not to make a Cleric, but why add that extra burden to inventory management? Bottom line- solid mechanics, great atmosphere, something a bit different for the dungeon crawl gamer. The so-bad-its-good cheesy voice overs are icing on the cake. Perfect treats (with some tricks!) for October/Halloween.

I remember playing these games as a kid, had so much fun with them. would definitely pick them up to relive those old memories. But really, characters named "Drug Addict" and "Alcoholic" in the preview screenshots? C'mon GoG, what are you doing >_>

Cannot suggest enough!!!

I cannot suggest this game enough. It is far less overwhelming than the Eye of the Beholder series. If you are worried about to bugs that affect some people in Strahd's Possession than just jump to Stone Prophet. This is CLASSIC RPG adventure at it's absolute best, there really is nothing like playing through the full game and actually feeling like you accomplished something by beating a REAL game.

Clunky but memorable

Strahd's Possession is the more memorable of these two, but still hard to recommend without reservations. It has a number of hostile design decisions (enemies that drain your levels, "spinner" and teleport traps that make navigation difficult, and at least one quest trigger (the ghost) that can completely ruin a playthrough if encountered too early. The interface is clunky, the framerate is poor, and the music can be difficult to take at times. However, the game's got a great atmosphere and the story wastes no time getting its hooks in and setting up a great villain. The titular vampire is a foreboding presence you never forget even when he's out of sight, and the land itself feels hostile. Even those design elements that kinda suck from a gameplay perspective nevertheless support the atmosphere -- Barovia is hostile and any would-be heroes are doomed, so why not have level draining enemies? Both games comes with not just a manual but a "cluebook" that serves as a slightly inexact strategy guide. The Stone Prophet guide is mostly just a stack of annotated maps. The Strahd's Possession guide, on the other hand, is a really lovingly made first person "journal" from the perspective of the player characters. It smooths out some of the game's worst aspects while adding more atmosphere to the world, and I would recommend that anybody interested in Strahd's Possession embrace the cluebook. 4 stars for the first game. Stone Prophet's design is significantly less hostile -- dungeons easier to navigate, etc. However, despite the improved interface it seems amateurish in comparison. The killer portrait art from the first game is sorely missed. It's a smoother but less interesting experience, up until the very last major encounter, which is like a brick wall, made worse by the fact that the ending cinematic froze the game -- had to watch it on YouTube. 3 stars for the second game, despite some cool ideas. I didn't hate it but it felt like a time waster rather than a gem.

Love the mechanics of Stone Prophet

Stone Prophet: I remember seeing reviews of this game in Top Secret and wanted to play it since then. Thank you GOG for making it possible! Stone Prophet has many great features. Graphics is great for it's time. Music is hypnotizing and I'd love to hear it remastered. Dungeons are complexed, engaging and challenging, but not impossible to beat. But what I absolutely loved about Stone Prophet was the freedom. It's one of the first games that allows you to use spells like 'knock' and 'teleport' to speed the game if you need it. "Knock" spell opens every door and if you are tired of looking for a key buried deep in the dungeon, just open it with a spell. Game do not cheat the system by putting magical locks everywhere. Thieves work the same way, just pick the lock and carryon. Same with teleport, when you get it you can move to ANY location you have on your minimap. What is beautiful about it, is that gameplay and story survives it. Good job guys, new titles could learn a lot from you.
