It feels good to be bad, but it feels even better to be the embodiment of evil! Discover your evil side as you build your own underground kingdom. Carve out a living, breathing world and attract a host of devilish creatures to swell the ranks of your dark hoards. Form an alliance with the Horned Reaper and expand your empire in your quest to reach the daylight and invade the realms above.
Dungeon Keeper 2 is everything its predecessor was, only better and badder! It is probably one of the most addictive and fun games ever created; with tons of dark humor, smooth gameplay, and high replayability value. In addition to that there is a well designed multiplayer mode and a pet-dungeon module that tests your ability to build the ultimate underground labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and other hellish devices. If you liked Dungeon Keeper you will love this ultimate installment of the Bullfrog series.

This is a highly addictive game with a gentle learning curve to help the player ease into the more advanced gameplay. Playing it now 18 years since release, I can say that it has aged very well. The gameplay mechanics were amazing back then, and have not been surpassed since. Sure the graphics are getting a bit dated, but they given the slightly comical nature of the game and models it doesn't really detract from the experience.
Runs fine on Windows 10.
I've not bought the GOG version, but I have both the first Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2 installed on an older, Win98 computer. I bought the games about ten years ago, and I have played them a lot, and downloaded lots of player-made maps.
In general I do not like rts games, although bought Seven Kingdoms from GOG out of curiosity about the game mechanics. I prefer turn-based strategy because it allows for much greater depth.
Why then do I like these two games? This seems to be largely down to the fun setting. They seem to have been the first games designed as a sort of inversion of the dungeon crawling type of game, playing the dungeon master as opposed to the hero, and still even now they seem to be the best examples of that inversion.
The fun setting certainly helps one to tolerate and even be amused at the idiotic behaviour of the creatures defending your dungeon. This contrasted with the idiotic behaviour of one's troops when playing Command & Conquer, which could be very tiresome. I think that there is also less annoyance in this regard in the DK games because most of the time you do not try to directly command creatures that are supposed to be serving you. In this respect DK 1&2 are like the later game Majesty which is another rts game I liked. Unlike Majesty, you can directly control creatures, at least in so far as you can re-locate them to another part of the dungeon, and you can slap your minions to make them work faster. On the other hand, in Majesty you have complete control of recruitment, while in DK 1 &2 only your minions, your basic workforce for digging tunnels and transporting gold and items, can be directly recruited, the other creatures are randomly spawned, although you can be sure of recruiting them when they spawn by controlling the gate, and your room layouts affect what creatures you can recruit.
DK 2 is a more polished game than DK 1 and there was one serious flaw in the game mechanics of DK 1 which was corrected in DK 2. DK 2 did also add a number of game play elements which enhance gameplay. Nevertheless DK 1 manages to be just as much fun.
Both games come with very long single player campaigns, and there are a number of secret levels to be unlocked while playing some other level. Some levels are quite hard, and I've sometimes peeped at walkthroughs you can find on the Internet to help me out. But I find almost all the levels I have completed have been endlessly replayable. On re-installing one of the games, I find I have to go through all the levels again that I have played before, no skipping, but I never resent this, even though half the campaign is about teaching the basics of the game.
Conveniently placed in the "system requirements" section, which nobody who buys a 20+ year old game will read, the store page tells you that by "purchasing" this game, you agree to EA's EULA, which explicitly tells you:
"This Software is licensed to you, not sold."
...and places many "interesting" restrictions on you, the user, such as:
"Your right to use the Software is limited to the license grant above, and you may not otherwise copy, display, seek to disable, distribute, perform, publish, modify, create works from, or use the Software or any component of it (...)"
"When you play this game offline, EA and its affiliates may collect and store non-personally identifiable data including your Internet Protocol Address (...)"
"By entering into this Agreement, you and EA expressly waive the right to a trial by
jury or to participate in a class action."
Since I do not agree to such ludicrous terms, I wanted to obtain a refund, but after about half a week, GOG basically told me to get lost, because I bought it more than 30 days ago.
So now I (do not) "own" a game which I cannot play as I do not agree with its ridiculous license.
Apparently DRM is fine with GOG, as long as its legal DRM (EULA), rather than software-based DRM.
I love this game, and was incredibly disheartened it ran poorly on my machine as I went from XP and beyond. So excited to see this released on GoG! You really can't go wrong with this strategy game.
This is one of my must have games for earlier PC Gaming.
I played this on a lot back in it original form under win 98, It's fun to play as long as it works, but between the crashes, and glitches under vista, and the fact that it can't load custom skermish maps , the level editor works great by the way, used to spend hours designing and playing custom maps, now I can't and that's what I really wanted to do again after all these years, and yes I've tried tweaking every setting too. I can still play the game with the prebuilt maps and such but after playing through them, I don't see any reason to play them again.
