As Zoë embarks on a journey where she eventually discovers a magical world behind our own, she will need to make decisions about what's important to her and what she's willing to risk for the people she loves. It's a good story, but a mediocre game

While Dreamfall is well-written, its numerous issues make it hard to recommend. The story takes interesting and touching turns, and even if it’s a sequel to a game I’ve never played, it works well on its own. The characters are compelling and I enjoyed the time spent with each of them. The worldbuilding is cool and detailed, and it’s an interesting universe to explore overall. The graphics are kind of basic for 2006, but I guess they’re fine and have some very inspiring designs and art direction which really contributes to the mood (the Dark People’s Library, for instance, looks fantastic). The soundtrack is also solid. Alas, the good aspects of the game are consistently let down by disappointing execution. With its strong writing and atmosphere, Dreamfall would have been good enough as a walking simulator with a few puzzles thrown in: instead, it tries its hands at multiple gameplay styles… none of which are well implemented. The combat is comically sloppy, the stealth is boring, the minigames are simplistic, the multiple dialog choices don’t seem to affect anything... And what the hell was that musical puzzle in the cave?! Even the solid storytelling suffers from the low production values. The characters have good dialogues and personalities, yes, but their stilted animations and sub-par voice acting (for some of them at least) make them feel quite lifeless. The story ends on a cliffhanger that leaves too many questions unanswered, made worse by the fact that the sequel ended up released 8 YEARS AFTER IT! Games should not end right in the middle like this... There’s an uncanny feel to Dreamfall, as if it had a really good story to tell but was unsure how to build a video game around it. It is a budget title, an awkward game to play, and it is way too pricey for what it is. Yet, there are things to enjoy in the journey it offers: I can’t recommend it to anyone, but if you like narrative-driven games set in interesting worlds, it might have something for you.

Not as good as it should be

I played this one because I loved "The Longest Journey." Pros: Good graphics, sound and music. Good story immersion. Cons: The story immersion is so good I started feeling for the characters, and bang, cliffhanger. I am really mad they did that. The story needs closure, but I don't thinks this will happen. It has be six years and nothing. FunCom seems to be making MMOs only. :((

Had so much potential

I LOVED The Longest Journey and wanted a sequel so badly. Then when we got it I promptly swept it up and wanted to be swept away. Unfortunately I wasn't. The game was full of "almost there" type gameplay that made you see a glimmer of a good idea that didn't quite reach "good." The story, setting, and dialogue all were good, but not good enough to keep me engaged through the slogs of poor controls, bad game mechanics, and fetch questing. If the game was more like the original in that it was basically JUST an adventure game (as Kickstarter and other and Telltale games is proving is still a wanted genre) I think it'd be better as they could have played to their strengths.

Most disappointing sequel ever

This game doesn't answer any of the (many) open questions of the prequel, mostly [spoiler!] why were the worlds united after all. There's a considerable time gap in the plot, which would be fine if the writers would have bothered to fill in the blanks regarding the (many) changes that occurred during that time. Apart from the incoherent story line, it also seems that the puzzle design is virtually nonexistent. Most puzzles are MGS wannabe avoidance puzzles, which are terribly clumsy and uninspired due to the game's amatueristic controls and joke of a fight mechanism. There wasn't a single aspect of this game which was not a total disappointment.

End of magic

Dreamfall could have been a great game like it's predecessors, but... Without giving much spoilers the game is unfinished story-wise and the ending might be frustrating for some people that played the first one, at least it was for me. Compared to the longest journey, the "magic and mystery" of the first one are gone, it's a bit like the setting has lost it's innocence, as the story is more mature and sad. Also the game has a hollywoodish feeling. Regarding the gameplay, the point & click is gone, and the game is more console friendly. This isn't a bad thing, but overall the gameplay is average at best, with bits of action and easy riddles, so you'll probably play this game more for the story.
