Totally unexpected how good this point-and-click game is! The pixel art is gorgeous and reminds me of when I played Primordia. The voice acting, though it may not be the best, is endearing. The music is fun. I thought it was interesting that at one point, you couldn’t proceed further in the game until you had the physical examination paper that was included with the purchase of the CD-ROM. But of course, that’s included digitally now, and you can Google it as well. I'm not the best at point-and-click games, but I got pretty far without using a walkthrough. Kinda disappointed with myself that I didn’t solve the last “riddle,” but the answer made me sigh—then chuckle. A chuckle because, of course, that is the answer in this high-fantasy game that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Dragonsphere is so short - it's a shame really, and unlike those buffed and dead serious magical kingdoms (Skyrim) of present time - quite funny . Just try to eat mud and tell me it's not true!
I had never heard of this game before, and it was a pleasant surprise, but I can't help but wonder "where was this game and how has it escaped notice for so long?"
This game is BEAUTIFUL, possibly the best looking 256-color pixel art I've ever seen, every screen a painting, and animation truly smooth. I'll also say that the story has a magnificent heel-turn with just the right amount of red herrings to keep its twist hidden until you get there.
I'm not crazy about the interface, and your character has one walking speed - painfully slow. There are items you can use to warp around to preset locations, but their usefulness is limited otherwise. You have an on-screen list of keywords you must click to do various interactions and none of them are "use" and most of them have singular actual uses, like "throw" and "put" and "push" and "pull", so their real job is just taking up screen real estate to save the art team from making the gorgeous paintings bigger. Also it seems that well over half the items you find in the game have no use whatsoever other than giving you points.
Be aware of the totally bizarre copy protection that happens RIGHT AT THE MIDPOINT OF THE ADVENTURE, so you get about 2-3 hours in and wham here come some questions from the manual, BUT, you're asked three questions. One of them is clearly found. One of them you can sort of suss out via context clues. And one of them is a wild guess because it's not mentioned ANYWHERE, I read through the material five times sure that I'd just missed it, but no. Get ready to look that one up on the GOG forums because this has been a problem since it came out 25+ years ago.
So Microprose developed a beautiful, twisting adventure, with pretty decent puzzles and great lore that ties into the gameplay, but with some baffling design decisions sprinkled among them. I enjoyed it, I'd probably recommend it but it's just not quite King's Quest 6 (two years prior) or Secret of Monkey Island (four years prior).
Well, this genre is based in 3 pillars: 1) Storyline 2) Graphics (be hand-drawn, or pixel-art) and 3) Gameplay.
I MUST give this game 5 stars on the first two.
The story is EPIC, AWESOME, FANTASTIC!!! The drama and intrigue is something that, probably, you never have saw in all of your gaming experience, as a whole. Prince Callash's quest is something that you're just not going to forget....
This games, however, lacks humour. But, as it is not the proposal of the game, it's alright. Anyway, DRAGONSPHERE's characters are those ones who makes you wish for a sequel! Interesting people, shocking revelations, and several nice races and cultures, helps to build one of the best of this genre!
Graphics? Pretty good. For it's age (18 years), better impossible. I think!
Well, the gameplay is good too... The problem are the puzzles, sometimes VERY HARD, even on "Novice" level. But, there are walkthroughs, right? Bugs are extremely rare, and as far as i know, there are NO DEAD ENDS!
