Dragon Age™: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Note: If you want to play this game you need to download mods (patches) to make it work. All the necessary patches are listed on PCGamingWiki website. Even with them I got 3 crashes but it is playable. After loving Dragon Age: Inquistion and finishing it multiple times I wanted to try Origins, because I saw many people saying that it was the best DA game. And I'm very disappointed; I didn't see anything captivating about it. I played for 8 hours I guess, GOG didn't track my playtime, and like a show with bad first episodes, I don't see why I should keep playing it, and I was thinking: why do people even like this ? The combat system is very bland for a CRPG, compared to Divinity: OS2 and Pathfinder: WOTR. Maybe the music ? I could just listen to it on YouTube. The graphics ? Obviously not. So the story ? Those 8 hours of playtime were of complete boredom, nothing special happens, 8 hours of just "go talk to that person, and now that person makes you talk to three more people about mundane topics about the world." This is a game, I don't care to learn about their fictional religion or politics in a room with nothing happening. 8 hours in and the game doesn't show anything to catch the player's interest, you don't even see the main villain, there's a war happening, you should care but why ? At least Inquistion has nice graphics, better combat, beautiful effects and maps that aren't completely mud. I didn't pay enough attention to the reviews praising this game, is because of nostalgia, if you don't have that I don't know why bother at all.

If you value your life and your time then do not play this game. Do not make the same mistake as me and give it more of your time because you wanted to see if they would do better for the other landmark/places that you have to visit. They don’t change and they all waste your time. The dungeons are too long and the exp is too low. The constant having to pick up useless stuff and clicking is too much. There should have been an auto pick up. But the main problem is that the game drags on for too long and no matter how many enemies you fight, they will always hit as hard and have as much life as they always have when playing the game. You slog through the game with time just ticking away. There’s so many battles…so many. Big dungeons, tons of battles, horrible loot, no story. The game is garbage. I thought, man I could really be doing something better with my time or playing a better game. Yes, the game is old and it has some interesting plot points but they never come up after hours of playing. It’s too much. Stay away from this game. I do not play with mods. I think the game should stand on it’s own and the game just blatantly sucks. It’s just another AAA big budget grind time waster of a game.

Awkward liberal Canadian attempt to combine The Witcher 1's "adult" dark fantasy themes with the naive and bumbling Baldur's Gate. Still better than the latter though.

A ,ot of reviews call it a modern Baldurs Gate. And that would indeed be beautiful - if it were true. It's not Baldurs Gate. It's colorful, and has very decent graphics even on a mobile system (unlike certain other games of that genre - I'm looking at you, Gerald) But that's about all the positive I can say about the game. The player has very little freedom in his decisions, the only 'nonlinear' thing about the game is that you can decide which area to visit first. More often than not you are forced to choose between two options that no remotely sane person would pick. If you're lucky enough to actually get two options. More than once you will watch in disbelive as the discussion unfolds like this: Game: Let's go do something totally insane "You": No, I don't think so Game: But we have to "You": I said no! It's insane, it's wrong, it is absolutely unnecessary, and nobody can force us) Game: Ok, so it is decided, we do it And once the illusion of free will is gone (or you decide you are good with playing the worlds dumbest, most shortsighted and infuriating Hero imaginable - and yes, that includes Jar Jar Bings) what remains of Dragon Age? Boring fights that take way too long, but are mostly identical. Maps that are to big to run errands (and you have to run errands. A lot.), but way to small to explore. If you really need to compare this game to the classics, it is much closer to TOEE than to BG or Planescape:Torment. So, talking about good old games... If you want freedom, play Morrowind If you want story, play Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, or P:T If you want to play in a consistent world, play Gothic If you want all that DA:O promises, play Baldurs Gate. If you're ok with just killing thousands of similar Monsters with a lame story and a railroad plot, at least do it the fun way and play Diablo.
