If you enjoy Point an Click adventures, dark, psychologically chilling macbre tones and strange, immersive storylines, then you will enjoy playing this (as well as the other developer's games ) at least as much as I did. Highly recommended.
"Downfall: Redux" is an adventure game that functions more like a visual novel in the sense that puzzles are extremely linear and easy, and the emphasis is on story and characters. There are few puzzles that require multiple actions, and it is often just a matter of finding an object that solves a task. While this is the core of adventure games, it felt unfulfilling in Downfall because it was too obvious (often the description of an object already told you what function it should have to a puzzle).
Given it's emphasis on story and characters at the expense of real gameplay, Downfall: Redux relied heavily on the voice acting, music, and visuals to create a unique atmosphere. While that atmosphere was often compelling, I found the story a little flat and melodramatic. The story was very predictable until it was completely off the rails and unfollowable. Because the game was so character-focused, I found it difficult to enjoy at times because many characters are generally not very likable or relatable (which I understand may be on purpose given the plot, but still...). As other users have noted, the music is the real standout, as it crafts the atmosphere as much as the visuals do.
The game has a serious and complex topic, and it is entertaining, as you really do want to see what comes next. With that said, it's not really "fun", and when you're done, you definitely don't have a "tee-hee, that was fun!"feeling.
So, getting the main complaint I'm sure we all share out of the way: the voice action is pretty bad. However I did feel Joe, the main characters voice grew on me as I continued through. I've never played the Cat Lady as it's animation seemed very choppy, but decided to pick up this game as it looked more polished. The gameplay itself is standard point and click adventure, what really stands out is it's atmosphere and music. The game never drags on and keeps it's pacing pretty good, with the music or some form of rhythm in the background to provide the tension, which works well with the setting. The characters namely Joe as he's the central are well developed, and learning about them and the issues they face are very compelling. What I found to be the best part was the message, not the message itself but how it's presented to the player, it's never shoved down your throat or forced on you and it's generally handle well. It gave me a lot of respect for the developers, and I hope to see more from them in the future.
This is a sequel to the Cat Lady (perhaps the best horror game of all time). I think the description of the game in the store should say that. It's adapted from a freeware game that predated the Cat Lady and that made me think that if it was related to the other title it would be a prequel, but it is not. The designer has made some changes to this game to more closely tie and the Cat Lady together, and you should play the Cat Lady first. Both game spoil each other a bit, since their plots are a bit tandem, but it is much worse for the Cat Lady to be spoiled since the beginning of that game relies so much on your disorientation. Whereas the plot twist/resolution in this is a bit hackneyed.
That's not to say this isn't a great game. It's more of a traditional adventure game than its predecessor. Rather than making your way through a story, you're looking around a surreal hotel searching for items that will allow you to explore more of it. Your discovery is bleak. The Cat Lady pulled you from the nader of depression to become, if not happy, at least a part of the world again. The hero of this game just explores the causes of his and his wife's suffering. He isn't allowed to make any progress. For a while I thought the story might be more allegorical than it was. That it was just the horrible feelings of a breakup and perhaps guilt at meeting someone new (Agnes) when you couldn't save the person you loved (Ivy). Instead you have a story of insanity that has been done before and has little meaning to impart to those of us who are completely bonkers. (or as Susan would say, those of us who haven't lost the plot). That being said the ideas in presenting the different broken aspects of the protagonists' psyches are awesome, and very original. And they are thought provoking as you think what does each of these things say about the characters in the game (if not what they say about us playing it).
Highly recommended, if you like horror adventure games.
Rem Michalski said he's a fan of Stephen King and he wasn't lying. So if you Like S. King's work, probably you'll enjoy this game.
Like in his other games, I like the interesting, sometimes deep, symbolism and allegories, and they're all over the place.
ah, yes. That absurd recipe and that whole blender segment is a jewel of dark humour. I needed the laugh. Thanks.
I like the ending when you're trying to play a "nice" Joe. He ends up a very, very nuanced character, let's put it like this...
