DOOM 3

No Fun, No Horror, No Gain. It Just Painful.

It's a pity, as I played Doom III BFG on Playstation 3 before and I enjoyed the game. Fast forward to 2021, with a top-of-the-line gaming PC, and it does not even launch. It shows a black screen, then a white screen, then shows a terribly pixelated "main menu" which appears as three white blocks...all the while, the title music is playing as if it is working as it should. Multiple attempted fixes later, and the issue still persists. I am waiting for GOG support to get back to me on this, but what I would like to know is why game like this, which is clearly broken on modern systems, are still being sold, and the developers of the game itself not trying to make a fix? It is not our responsibility as consumers to look for some archaic fix to solve glaring issues. Very disappointed.

Do you enjoy: • Creatures that, thanks to their teleporting, negate all tactical planning? Not being able to plan ahead, because you can guarantee that a creature will teleport in out of nowhere, usually right next to you? • Creatures that come from inaccessible vents, who are invisible and invincible until they attack? • Creatures that soak up all splash damage, ensuring their allies survive a rocket blast? • Narrow corridors of the same tileset, with so few large spaces you forget what it's like to see beyond ten metres? • Every creature being the same blue-grey colour? EVERY CREATURE. • Monsters whose sole purpose to wait behind a door in expectation that someone will open it and they can leap out at them? • Simultaneously hearing three overlapping, unrepeatable speech tracks with no subtitles? • Going through the same room ten times? And... • Clearing the same room ten times, one enemy at a time? Like, bang, one down, zap, new enemy teleports in, bang, zap, bang, zap... • Learned helplessness: the feeling that nothing you do matters and nothing you do can change anything, you're just on a railroad and you don't "do", you are "done to"? Then this game is for you! Now with no automap at all at no extra cost! Doom 3 spits on the legacy and innovation that the earlier games built. I enjoyed the earlier games, even the hideous, torturous "oho look how smart I am" Sandy Petersen levels (sometimes). The only thing good about this version is that it comes with Doom 1 and Doom 2. Doom 3 came out in 2004, the expansion in 2005. No new Doom game would come out on PC until 2016. It's a miracle that Doom 3 didn't kill all love for the series entirely. Do not buy Doom 3. Maybe buy Doom 3 BFG edition if you want Doom 1 and 2 and it's cheaper to buy this than buy them separately. But do not buy this to play Doom 3. You will not enjoy it. This place is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing valued is here.

If you intend to play the vanilla version, use the dhewm3 source port, it will guarantee a better experience and it is easy to add mods. Now some points about the gameplay: - Everything is dark, a darkness that tires the eyes (this was resolved in the BFG version); - The scenarios are the same, the types of enemies don't vary much, and the combat is rubbish, with the enemies always very close and surrounding, and there is nowhere to run to machine gun them, as some sessions are too tight, there are also the famous "jump scares", and some are extreme trollers; - There are lockers that need codes to be opened, and these codes are in email messages and audio logs, so get ready to read and listen a lot; boring or not? Doors also require codes, but there are few of them; - I got to the hell part and then gave up, hell sucks, boring and tiring, and the "Soul Cube" is complete shit. I applaud those who finished the base game and expansions! Overcoming boredom in this game is the biggest challenge, and I failed at it, I confess; - Anyway, I'm sure you'll like it initially, but after a while the boredom will be killing you, believe me. There are also some evil lines and laughs in the air, at first they are cool, but when you get to hell you will want to shoot the guy with the evil laugh! For they become tiring; - In short, DOOM 3 is not a fun game, it does not have a smooth gameplay rhythm and everything will get tiring, sooner or later. Hope this helps! =)
