It is worth playing
The story is interesting (well, this is the first Doom to really feature a story, PDAs, audio-logs...), for whatever reason it reminds me a bit of the Shock-series (System Shock, Bioshock). Maybe, because the people on Mars got turned into these zombie and other mutant things. Not with the help of boosters etc. but with the help of the power/demons from the "other dimension". Anyway, it is a long time (10 years), since I last played Doom 3, don't really remember the graphics that much, but I do know, that it was dark and the only light source you had was you pocket-lamp, that you could also use as a melee weapon. Now, you have you lamp on you shoulder and it is much more user-friendly, because you can use the lamp and the weapons the same time. To be honest, I didn't really like the original Doom 3 ("vanilla version" as it is called today). It was dark, didn't have much colors and the whole gameplay feel/was slow... For me, Quake 4 was better in that way. The enemies were faster in the latter game. Quake 4 was more colorfull, had open areas etc. But today, for whatever reason I like this slowness in Doom 3 BFG. I can't really tell why. Maybe, because I'm older? Anyway I won't write much about the BFG version, you can read many things about it elsewhere. Is it worth to play it? Sure. But don't have unrealistic hopes, also the original Doom 3 mods won't work whit this edition.
