Rough draft for what came after

First off, let me say that I first started this series with Divinity: Original Sin 2 based on recommendations here and elsewhere, and that is a near-perfect RPG on nearly every level. I was so impressed early on that I immediately picked up the "original" and started playing it after finishing up D:OS2. While this isn't a "bad" game per se, having played through D:OS2, it feels very much like a rough draft for D:OS2 and lacking in many ways.The UI is rough; the voice acting is sub par; the music is just... uggh. I honestly couldn't keep playing it after getting to the first town. Inventory management is pretty terrible.... trading with vendors gives you the option to sell gear you are wearing, with no indication you are wearing it! All in all, while I would not say don't buy this game, if you are jumping in based on the most excellent sequel, temper your expectations accordingly. Likewise, unless you are an aficionado of RPGs and very forgiving of this one's shortcomings, I wouldn't even bother with this game because it may discourage you from giving the sequel a whirl.

Must Play for cRPG fans

I'll try to be short since my English is not very goood: Like: - It's long. 100+ hours with good addictive gameplay - Great detailed world and lore - Great music - Amazing game design. Especially maps, environment - Great humor - References to Burzum :) - Interesting uniqe quests. No "pause saving the world to save my birthday and bring 10 eggs". - Clear and simple character/weapon/armor stats and leveling, no 2D8 and PoE staff Dislike: - Too easy. I played on tactician level. As I undesrand the hardest level does not increase battles difficulty - Game does not urge you to vary battle tactics. By the mid of game you develop best tactics and simply use it everywhere. Archer is too strong while mages become less and less useful towards the end of game - I personally prefer real time, not turn based. It's my first turn-based RPG and I suspect this makes game too easy - AI is sometimes extremely stupid, which is seen more obviosly in turn-based game - I personally prefer bigger parties (like 6 in BG2). Here you have 2 pre-defined characters and another 2 you can choose. The choice is quite limited. The game does not urge you to vary once defined party. So I didn't play with another 2 characters - Lack of interaction between party members. Nothing close to BG2 or DA:O. - Very subjective: ending does not touch feelings (like you usually have after game or bookwith good story) Still - great game to play for everyone, though not a masterpiece. Good action RPG, sadly some flaws

I’ve been playing this game for about 20 hours now and feel like I have a good grasp of how the game is like. I will be starting with the negative in the game and then move on to the positive in the game. Please read my entire review for the justification for my rating. The Negative: 1. The quest marker seem to be only «half-functioning», so it sometimes had me running around like a headless chicken. I think that it should either be 100% quest marker or not at all. There was a lack of clues at times as well, which contributed to me running around as a headless chicken. Sometimes the quest marker shows a location that is not in the current stage of the quest. 2. As someone who have never played a TBS RPG in my life I felt like the combat had a way too steep learning curvive, with minimal information on how to properly play. I love it that devs make hard games, and I dislike hand-holding, but I think there is a fine line between hand holding and not hand holding. The Positive: 1. The combat is versatile, clever and interesting. 2. I love the party banter system. It’s one of my favourite things with Baldur’s Gate 2. 3. The setting is interesting and I enjoy the dark, light and the humour. I mostly play grim or dark RPG so this is a strange but welcome change. 4. I find myself enjoying the merchant banter, which is weird, cause in most games I can’t wait for them to shut up. 5. The writing is excellent. The reason I landed on 3 out of 5 stars is because what I found negative in the game had a much bigger impact on my enjoyment of the game than what the positive did. Whenever I was out of combat, and didn't have a quest marker that was weird I found myself having a lot of fun, but the moment I was met with the oddly functioning quest marker and steep learning curve for the combat I felt I had to quit the game and have a break.

A rejuvenating take on CRPG

It's a strange thing an Indie dev acomplished what Larian did with Divinity series that a big developer hasn't dreamed ever. It's another example of succesful indie working over AAA companies. Something only accomplished by games like Stardew Valley, Shovel Knight, Factorio, etc, that gives you hope that, besides what people think is the most popular take on RPGs or the most profitable for the industry, there will always be somebody who is going to give a sincere, personal, little piece of pure entertainment and not a fast-fooding videogame product with the only sight of making money. In fact, Divinity Original Sin, it's not something really special. Its plot it's rather simple and, sometimes, nonsensical, it has a really good setting and music but it's not better than Black Isle or Sierra works, it has some obvious conception mistakes and annoying flaws in its combat system and graphically, it's not a step forward in the genre, certainly. It's just... fun, full of hilarious comments and conversations, challenging, good paced and abundant of little playable tweaks that make it very unique. A very cohesive and round title that makes you, sometimes, smile, sometimes, anger and forever keep on playing until you have finsihed it. I'm really glad that something like this exists in my library of games because it's a part of the modern history of RPGs and inde gaming developing and, I guess, that also makes it a very little part of gaming history as a whole.

Loving it

Have bought it some time ago, only got warm with it slowly. Now I've had holidays and didn't wanna play W3 for a 6th time... And this game is awesome! Play it with a Logitech controller and have limited the FPS to 90 on my RX580. It did work unlimited, but the GPU got kinda loud... Aanyway. I found it a little hard to get into and have to admit that I looked up some quests because I ran into walls, but all in all I'm quite impressed. Funny dialogs (especially with animals), smart character development, exciting quests: This RPG got everything I was looking for. And the graphics, delicious! I play it on Arch Linux with very good results. Am looking forward to a second playthrough on higher difficulty. Also looking forward to playing the second part, already tried it and works also well with Lutris on my OS.
