Diablo + Hellfire

I spent 30 minutes walking around casting fireballs against the butcher at level 9 to die about 10 times. This was lame and not fun.

Though I do not own the GOG release, I do own the original PC release so I think this should suffice. Diablo was one of the first RPGs of it's kind I ever played and I had a huge amount of fun with it, today it is still a good time to come back to. Though it is very important to remember: this game has not aged anywhere near as gracefully as it's successor Diablo II! In many ways it is identical to Diablo II, though the the gameplay is much MUCH more clunky. Now eventually you do get used to the awkwardness of the controls and UI and things really start to pick up and get fun after the first 30 or so minutes, but even then this is not a terribly polished game and most of dungeons really start to blur together, lacking the creativity of later dungeons. Furthermore the world building of later games is almost completely absent so don't go expecting a good story... Especially the ending, without giving away spoilers it is abrupt and unsatisfying. If you loved Diablo 2 and/or 3, be sure to manage your expectations with this one. Diablo is certainly a landmark game, but the years have not been kind to it. I cannot recommend it over either of it's successors, but it is still a fun game that is great to return to if you have nostalgia for it or you want to play yourself the birth of the Diablo franchise.

First off the game itself is amazing and you will enjoy every minute of it but you will first run into a few problems that will give you a headache. The first issue is the game seems to be locked at between 20 to 30 fps and trying to run the game at higher resolutions will result in the game not stretching to the full size of your screen. Usually this wouldn't be much of an issue but the mouse has this weird bug where it will run off the edge of the black borders and disappear. This version of Diablo comes with a unique launcher that gives you three options. Diablo, Diablo Classic and Video Settings. Diablo allows you to run the game at a higher RES with some visual imporvements but only allows for Multiplayer in LAN while Diablo classic only runs at the original RES of the game with no visual improvements but allows for Online Play via Battlenet. Lastly is Video Setting, where you can change the resolution, add antialiasing, anisotropic filtering and vertical sync. Enabeling vertical sync though seems to cause the mouse to stutter for some odd reason. As of writing this review the only way to get a smooth FHD 60FPS gameplay is through mods. I personally recommend Belzubub which will solve most of the problems this game has (except for the issues with multiplayer) but check the forum for some other suggestions for HD mods. In conclusion this game is worth it if you have the patience to get past these annoyances and restrictions.

My personal grudge against Activision-Blizzard does not allow me to go higher than 3/5. It's a cult classic game, one worth checking now that it has been updated, but I would not ever give even 1% of my payment for shady, discusting publishers. I will still buy it, just to show them that their long forgotten games were even better, than what they are making nowdays. And hopefully encourages them to let GoG release Diablo II with it's expansions.
