had a grand time

I think this is the first time I review a game, so bear with me. I've been gaming very rarely for the last 10 years, for lack of time. I have lately got a Steam Deck, which has allowed me to attempt to catch up. I have 1000s of games to try; most don't hold my attention more than 20mn. I found myself going back to Dex, and I did finish it, something rare for me. No individual part of Dex is good, but the different aspects mesh into a game that holds itself together better than most. The best parts which drag it out of the mud and into the greats: the artistic direction and the story. Neither will stand out immediately, but the artistic direction has this Eu-sci-fi touch, and lived feeling. The story has some original touches and is neat, the characters memorable, and their individual stories are touching enough to provoke emotion. The voice acting is really way better than anything you can expect from a small studio. The worst parts: Hacking sequences are no better than gamejams. Unimaginative levels, difficulty all over the place, very basic mechanics and run-of-the-mill graphics and sound effects. It completely feels like those sequences were an afterthought, and I often found myself thinking, "this isn't fun!" while playing. It's telling that I was willing to put myself through those to continue the story, though! Outside of hacking, action sequences are also barely passable. Combat works by cheese, which isn't very fun. Running and jumping animations have great keyframes that are very dynamic, but the movement itself is stiff. It's not _bad_, but there is room for improvement. I'll be looking at the next game by this studio/people. If they can keep the same level of polish for the story and the graphics, and upgrade the action (or make a turn-based game without action), then I'll be incredibly interested. If not, I'll still be interested! I enjoyed Dex better than a hundred others. Thank you for concocting this neat game!

What a banger

Action adventure 2D platforming with RPG elements, you could say is a mix of Castlevania with Shadowrun,, maps are small, your arsenal is limited and your fists are your most trusted weapon, , but don't let the small scale deceive you, the game is very well crafted, the zones are packed full with secrets to find and characters to meet, and your interactions can have varying degrees of results on sidequests, there's a hacking minigame that is literally that, you hack into thinks and traverse the "cyberspace" gathering intel and resources while fighting security systems with twin stick shooting mechanics, these sections are rarely hard, and they all serve a mission purpose, if the game just wants you to read flavor text you won't have to suffer through a minigame like in Deus ex. The art style is gorgeos and the music doesn't lag behind, with really nice voice acting, Overall the game is fantastic, only encountered a bug and it solved by reloading a previous save file. can't recommend it hard enough to fans of the genre.

Amazing cyberpunk game

If you love pixelated graphics and cyberpunk vibes, this game is for you. Everything's is perfect, from the soundtrack to the story. It's one of the few games where I tried to complete EVERY achievement.

Such a wonderful game. Deus Ex 2D is the best description. If you like something like Deus - take it without a single doubt

Competent but not Compelling

Having spent at least 20 hours completing Dex, what impressed me the most is the characters. The solid writing is delivered by excellent voice acting and the sprite work is of the high quality retro point-and-click games dedicated to their character design. The music at each NPC's location fit perfectly lending a familiarity to each character that made revisiting them much like seeing an old friend. The world design is also complete with its own character. Regions are unique with the futuristic slums appropriately dismal and the neon high rises sufficiently cyberpunk. The art is great and the associated audio is fitting, but it isn't as solid when compared to the depth of the character of the NPCs. The level design is mostly straightforward with some Metroidvania flare in alternate paths that can be explored with character upgrades. The combat is accessible with instant kill takedowns being my preferred approach. For stronger enemies Dex's punches, blocks, and dodges are pit against their attack patterns. Fights often become wars of attrition and once an area is cleared enemies do not respond unless the story demands it. The AR/hacking combat shifts out of a 2D brawler to a 2D shooter where Dex's avatar is bombarded with attacks from various viruses and intrusion countermeasures. The story leans on familiar concepts from sci-fi but has enough twists to be original. For me, story is just an excuse to explore more game mechanics in a cool environment and Dex's story achieves this. It doesn't distract but it doesn't enhance the experience either. I enjoyed exploring the world of Harbor Prime and learning the game mechanics to hone my skills and advance my character, but now that I'm done I don't feel the need to go back. Although I see that there are achievements I have not unlocked, I'm not motivated to go back and get them. Dex is good and does what it does well, but it didn't draw me in like great games can. I recommend it, but it isn't a favorite.
