Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Deux Ex is one of my favourite games of all time! What can i say that hasn´t been said about this game? Well, not much. The last time i played it is over a decade ago, but i still remember scenes out of it, like the conversation with the bar tender and others, certain areas in the game, happenings. Most games i forget rather quickly, some may be remembered as being good, a few have these memorable moments, which have that special something.

Things flash into my mind when I think of this game. INTELLIGENT. INTELLECTUAL. GENIUS. DEEP IN TRUTH. Do I have any evidence to back that up? This game will blow your mind. Give it a playthrough with nothing extra, Then play it again after adding loads of cool mods. That's what I did! Can't remember where I keep my disk, almost want to buy this if it goes on sale but it's such a huge long game that I almost feel pained to attempt to play it again because it requires you to make serious effort and pay close attention and draws you in. It's EXCELLENT. There is no game out there like this. Everyone should play this once or twice. It's KOTOR/KOTOR2 Loooooooonnnngggggg but obviously more finished, better polished in every way. Do yourself a favor and get into this!

Imagine a cyberpunk world where every single conspiracy theory is real and every faction fights for power. You are a special agent and you will go on missions but let me stop here and let you discover the story. It might sound crazy sometimes but it's raising very good questions and there is some branching narrative in the story based on your choices and also multiple ending! It's an FPS/RPG hybrid using Unreal Engine 1 and it has very nice indoor and outdoor locations. On every mission, there are multiple routes you can take and multiple methods you can apply (brute force, stealth, hacking and lockpicking, maybe getting some help from a character or any combination of these) and the level design is just absolutely amazing. Your character has skills and implants, there are a lot of weapons and tools in the game to help you on your mission and you can also use your skills to hack things and use the environment against your opponents. It's an experience to explore all the interesting locations, talking to characters and watching the cinematics and the story unfolding. You can interact with most of the things in the levels, there are "secret" places with extra ammo and tools and secret e-mails or messages what will give you some more information about the story and the world. I think every gamer should play and finish this game at least once, it's a bargain even paying full price for this game.

It should tell you a lot, that the latest titles, in this franchise, are slowly re-introducing elements, already present, in this first game. Definitelly worth a pick-up, if you didn't play it yet. Do note, it has a steep learning curve, but oh so worth it, for the mechanics, the gameplay, and the story.

...and it's not nostalgia, since it's my first time playing it in 2021. Despite the old graphics (in my opinion, has its charm too) and sometimes an odd gun combat system, it's one of the best games I have ever played. If I had to pick only one thing to convince people to play this “old” game, it would be the dialogue, it truly shines as its own thing, and I can’t think of any other game that exists with the same level of conversation topics, and I know there will never be anything like it (seriously, play it! You will know what I mean when playing it). Also, ignore the bad reviews on gameplay or being an older game, it's way more polished and complete than modern game releases. Bonus points: The soundtrack is very good!
