The original turn based classic...

Deadlock - Plantary Conquest is the original. This game was written in Windows 95 but was made playable in Windows 3 as well (hence an older 'menued' interface). Yes, it is a strategy war game but you will want to play this game over and over again. Why? The voice acting and video excerpts are STILL the greatest I have ever seen in ANY game to date. The interaction between the races is superb and the development of this game is still one of the best ever. There are seven races and each race is awesomely developed. The insectoid Ch'Cht, the 'evil' Cyth, the middle of the road Humans, the super intelligent Re'Lu, the engineering Maug, the environmental Uva Mosk, and the brawny Tarth. This is one of the few games that I keep coming back to even over these many years. It is an easy game to learn the basics, but as your colonies grow, managing becomes more difficult keeping track of each area as you grow. Working to maximize efficiency is just a cover up for the real game though. Yes "the real game" is really all the fun commentary that comes along as your empire grows or shrinks. A true game experience for the ages and hopefully ages to come... Thanks GOG and mostly thanks to Accolade and Tommo for reviving and making this ageless classic available for all to enjoy once more...

At Long Last!

I'm pretty sure I joined this site hoping this game would eventually get released here and after at least two years of waiting it finally has!! This was one of the first PC games I ever played and it's still a great game to this day. Definitely check it out if you are into strategy games.

A good game, even today

This game was really good in my memories as kid, but it is also still good today. That is a TBS with sci-fi setting, where you collect ressources, develop technologies, and crush player. The Pro: - Games are around 3 hours timespan, meaning that if you're a worker with an heavy loaded agenda, it suits perfect. - Interface is, even by today's standard, quite good. You have to manipulate cursor and drag and drop, but it's really tuned. - Games mechanics works fine, like you have a cost to transfer ressources form A to B, but it's done automatically, you cannot overflow a region with armies and so on. - Graphics also are not so overpixelated, as the game was planned for standard windows in win 95/98 with scalable elements The con: - IA is not really challenging, even in harder modes - You got only one soundtrack pro civlization, and it is quite repetitive - When you're economy start to goes wrong, getting into micromanagement could be painful

Charming and fun in small bites.

Deadlock was one of my favorite games to play as a kid, building up my colony was very satisfying and the different alien races added a lot of variety even if they all effectively play the same way with different pros and cons. Deadlock is ultimately a simpler and more accessible version of other turn-based strategy and empire building games of the time, letting you tailor scenarios to be as short or as long as you want them to be. It's a race to either build the required amount of cities or destroy your opponents militarily and claim the planet as your own. One of the benefits to it being a bite-sized Civ-style game was that it was perfect for manageable multiplayer sessions. Unfortunately that functionality has been removed from this release but the single-player is still fun enough if you want to play this type of game without having to get too involved or spend too much time with it. On top of the solid core gameplay is an extremely charming and humorous universe with great world building. I feel like the Deadlock games have sort of fallen through the cracks which is a shame because they're just as fun today a pick-up and play titles. Speaking of which, Deadlock 2 is practically the same game with more features so you may want to pick that one up instead. I personally prefer the simpler Windows-style UI of the first game however.

The song IS included.

Not sure if they added it later or what, but the song IS included with the game. In Gog Galaxy, right click on the title, manage installation, show folder. It's named DEADSONG.WAV. That alone might be worth the price of admission. Super glad to be playing this on modern hardware. The sequel doesn't bring a lot to the table, and doesn't come with the song, so I think that means the original edges it out in value for money. I feel this has just the right amount of strategy and detail, without getting too crazy.
