Description

Entertaining but not quite the legend

It's been years since nearly all my gamer friends have pushed me to discover Day of the tentacle. When I heard that it was remastered, I decided to give it a shot. DoT is certainly an outstanding game. The scenario is entertaining and very funny. The characters are really fun and add a lot to the environment (voice acting is on point as well). The witty remarks that make point and click games so addicting are there as well. But I tend to like point and click games that combine humour with adventure and the adventure is quite lacking to be honest. The game is quite static. It takes place only in one mansion (even though there will be some changes. Can't say more without avoiding spoilers really). The setting of the game in one mansion has also big advantages. The first one is challenge. There is no real guideline in what you have to do. You can collect an object during the first 20 minutes of the game that you will only need at the end. As a player you are thus completely free and even if the combination are logic, you need to set your own objective before starting to collect things blindly. Attention to dialogue is thus key. Contrary to MOnkey Island that is more linear (you cannot leave a zone util you have unlocked it and found every object needed), you can wander in all the space available without restraints. The game is filled to the rim of cultural references and I recognise that it is REALLY a must for fans of point and click games. However, I do not find it as enthralling as it was presented to me. I still enjoyed it and plan to start again with the commentaries of the production.

A Classic Revision Done Right

This Remastered edition was in fact my first experience playing this game at all. And not only did I enjoy it, I ended up dowright loving it! In terms of presentation I think that the update does justice to the original, or at least, offers a valid alternative to the original take in both graphics and soundtrack. Now the game is truly a cartoon adventure of sorts which doesn't look bad on modern screens at all. Gameplay improvements such as the verb wheel are also appreciated (I personally feel the verb system can be very tedious, which I experienced via the copy of Maniac Mansion that is present in DotT). And the strongs of the game are still present, such as the whacky, very peculiar humour that took me aback despite having played various graphic adventures before this one. It is a game I can recommend without a doubt! I wanted to mention two technical problems I encountered. The first one is a music bug that made music tracks loop in wrong places indifinitely, preventing you from experiencing the soundtrack. Thankfully a very recent patch fixed that, so in case you encounter mentions of this issue online, it's now fixed on GOG as well. The second one is a problem with subtitles that do not keep up with dialogue, making it so that the characters finish talking and then wait for the subtitles to finish, creating long awkward pauses that can be very annoying and ruin the timing of jokes. I'm not sure what the technicalities are, however there exists a method not stated in the controls window within the game that lets you increase or decrease the delay of dialogue subtitles. So in case you encounter this issue, simply choose a character you can repeatedly talk with and use their dialogue exchange as reference while editing the delay until you find your preferred value. The keys for changing it in a QWERTY Italian keyboard are '-' decrease and '+' increase, and they can be different for other keyboard types, so check how to do it in SCUMMV to find the correct keys.

Green T & The Sushi Platter Approved

I was a huge fan of Maniac Mansion, so my excitement was palpable when they originally announced that Day of the Tentacle was being released as a sequel. PCs had just started using that new fangled technology called CD-ROMs which allowed them to make a "talkie" version of the game, which was mindblowing at the time. Fortunately, the game lived up to the hype, as it's one of the most revered adventure games ever written. It's a mix of weird b-sci-fi horror with plenty of humor packed into puzzles which fall inbetween not impossibly difficult, yet not so obvious that the challenge is lacking. Now, as far as the Remastered aspect is concerned, Double Fine has done a fantastic job! A number of people were skeptical that the game was just put through a filter (like you'd find in the Lucas-Arts based emulator SCUMMVM), but after playing the game, I can say that this is not the case. There's a number of little details added that those filters can't add. On top of which, there are a number of little additions that add even more humor to the game, such as being able to read the actual letter Green Tentacle sent to Bernard. There's also some editions to the sound, such as an improved soundtrack (I kind of like the charm of the original, but that might just be nostalgia talking). The most impressive aspect is that they had access to the original masters of the audio, meaning that they no longer had to go with lower quality compressed sound that the original had to go with. Try toggling back & forth using F1, and see for yourself! Finally, there's some nice bonuses like developer's commentary, concept artwork, and I even enjoy the various hidden achivements that come from messing around in game. The UI is also improved, allowing for full screen presentation. I'm currently using the Steam Controller with it, and it feels natural. All in all, a really well done version of the game! Finally happy to have an official rerelease of the game!

This game really holds up

About 23 years ago, I played this beautiful games called 'Day of the Tentacle'. It was one of my favourite adventure games, alongside 'Sam & Max Hit the Road' and 'The Secret of Monkey Island'. I replayed the latter two recently and was surprised by how well these game held up over two decades later. Now, 'DotD' finally got remastered, and it played better than ever. True, the 90s adventure game mechanics are getting dated, but the story, characters, voice acting, and humour are still great and vibrant by today's standard. The bonus features of production artwork and developers' commentary are a nice touch to an already appealing game.

Still fun without the nostalgia

Out of most of the Lucasarts library, this and maniac mansion were the games I never played, but I've completed Sam & Max, Full Throttle as well as Grim Fandango. Plus: - Getting this on discount is especially a good deal since it's 2 games in 1. - If you enjoy the Lucasarts style of point and click games, this remastered version will be up your alley. - Updated UI does away with one of the painful parts of the game - If it wasn't a feature in the old versions, highlighting things you can interact with makes the game less painful Minus: - If you miss the hints buried in the dialogue, you're going to have a tough time figuring out the puzzles - It's possible to figure out two-thirds of the solutions on your own, but the remaining puzzles are a real stretch of the imagination - In other Lucasarts games all the items are in a single character's inventory; but not this game. Having to walk around and share items across 3 characters is rather painful at times
