You come back from work hoping to get a good night's sleep but then you notice light blinking on your answering machine. It was your brother – an architect redeveloping an old train station and hotel. He called to ask for your help. Alarmed by his frightened voice, cryptic information about some disappearance and strange whispers in the background you board a train without hesitation. From now on your adventure has just begun and soon you will realize that although no one is there, you are not alone...
This Myst-style horror-adventure game will bring fear into your heart. From the very beginning you are exposed to an overwhelming but invisible ghost presence – strange calls, footsteps, voices from nowhere. In order to help your brother and survive you will need to solve the mystery of this abandoned, haunted place. And remember! Do not let it to find you! Do not let it to find you... Do not.. Let... find...
The game is best played in a dark room with your speakers turned up. Unless you're scared, of course.

The first time I tried this game, I was not that impressed. I feared it was yet another Myst clone with irrelevant puzzles and little story to back it up. How wrong I was ... In truth, this is a brilliant horror adventure games which will put you on the edge of your seat. The attention to detail is amazing and while the game is slow to get going, after an hour of playing, you'll have a hard time to stop playing! This game is really a hidden gem of massive proportions.
The premise of the game is for you to figure out where your brother is (as well as the others who were at the old train station), who/what took him and why?
I found this game to be a better than average game but not one that everyone must own. The graphics are fine, the ambient sound is very atmospheric and the clues to the mystery can be convoluted. I also found the puzzles to be very logical and variant in their challenge levels. That said, the game did have me thinking about it even when I wasn't playing it, which says something as I'm not a very big adventure gamer. I also found it helpful to keep my own notes so that as important information was imparted to me I could shuffle them around to see how they fit in with the rest of my information.
The setting is confined which can make you feel a little claustrophobic knowing that there is someone or something looking for you. Which makes it a fantastic title for gamers looking to enjoy Halloween at an electronic level.
Overall, I would recommend this game to players as I did have a good time with it. It also made want to try other adventure games.
Dark Fall: The Journal is a first person perspective point and click adventure game, set in a British town in the late 1940s. It is based on a short ghost story of Jonathan Boakes who eventually designed and produced this game himself.
You are in search of your missing brother who was investigating paranormal events in an old hotel. At the start of the game you meet the spirit of an 11-year old child, Timothy Pike, who leads you to the train station next to the hotel. Tim's ghost will prove to be a helpful, though cryptic, hint giver throughout the game.
Dark Fall combines quite a gripping storyline with eerie music, dito sound effects and carefully designed locations. Gameplay is mainly focused on collecting clues and solve (sometimes complex) puzzles. Ironically, "Dark Fall: The Journal" actually lacks a journal that contains all clues you have collected. This may seem to be a downside at first, but it actually helps the player to become immersed with the game as he is solely responsible for writing down all relevant clues and information.
The game may become repetitive at some points as you have to revisit somelocations over and over again but the story is so strong that you will want to finish the game in order to get the answers you're looking for. Probably just once, though, as the game has very little short-term replayability. The graphic detailing sometimes seem outdated in respect to the time the game was produced, but Dark Fall is nevertheless a very decent game.
GOG.COM adds a nice bonus by including the game soundtrack. I hope the "hits and solutions" guide will also become available in the future, as it was also present in both the original game release and the special "pins & needles" release of early this year.
Allright, so if your even on this page it's obvious that you have an interest in adventure games so I'll skip the whole "you'll enjoy it if you are an adventure game fan" thing.
Let's get the cons out of the way first and, to be honest, there's really only two things I could complain about and both deal with play time. First, it is a short game. That's the main flaw. You'll probably finish it in about 4-7 hours depending on how quick you are with the puzzles. Second, as with most adventure titles, and especially ones that rely a lot on puzzles, you'll probably only be able to enjoy one playthrough unless you suffer from severe memory loss.
Now that that's done let's get top the good stuff. On top of everything else, you want to play this game for the atmosphere. Is it going to make you wet your pants? Probably not, but it is still very creepy nonetheless. The word I would probably use to describe it is unsettling. You find yourself completely alone in a run down, condemned hotel and train station ( well not completely alone) and the more you discover the less you're going to want to linger. There are very few moments during the game where you wont feel at least uneasy. As an example, there is not a single living creature (in a physical sense, disembodied voices aside) in the game besides you and maybe a bug or two and yet you always feel as though something could jump out at you any minute. The sound's are played perfectly to enhance this creepiness and the graphics were never bad enough to break immersion. Then there's the story. Maybe it's not so much the plot itself as much as how it's told that I like. You pick up pieces of what happened from newspaper clippings, notes left lying around, journals, and occasionally spirits. You're always searching for the next bit of information and every little item found feels like an accomplishment. The story itself also is very solid with plenty of paranormal and arcane happenings to keep any horror fan satisfied. But, an adventure game isn't just a setting and a story right? That's where the puzzles come in. This will be what you spend most of the time thinking about in the game. I found the puzzles to be at a perfect difficulty: not so easy that you become bored but also not so hard so that you'll rarely ever need to consult a walkthrough to beat them.
I would probably give it a 4.5 if I had the option but I'll round up because it's certainly closer to 5 than to 4. If you're looking for a psychological/ horror adventure game (and if you're here I'm assuming you are) then I cant think of a better game. If you're even slightly interested give it a shot you wont be disappointed.
I liked Dark Fall. I'm giving the game 4 stars but really I think it is more 3.5 but I can't choose half a star. The game gives a nice creepy atmostphere and as you explore you slowly start to figure out what happened here. The main thing I was happy to experience iwth Dark Fall was that there are some actual puzzles. So many adventure games just have you find an item and take it to the correct place and call that a puzzle. A real puzzle involves finding clues to solving a puzzle where there are things you have to move around. The graphics are pretty decent. You aren't running into people so the game doesn't have to try and make life like humans as much as it is just making a 3d room to explore. Like I said before the game does give a nice creepy feeling as you explore but I don't think your character is any actual danger. Be sure to have some paper handy for note taking. I'm also happy to see this on GOG since I believe it was released by DreamCatcher Games or the Adventure Company in the U.S.A. and their older games seem to always have problems running on newer operating systems.
