Hardware matters

TL;DR make sure to have atleast 120 hz refresh rate on a game like this. Some reviews with difficulty complaints did not mention if they used gaming displays or not. I'd have posted this as comment on review but this site does not have that possibility. I have few hours of playtime on this on a 60 hz display and it was extremely difficult. I'm now on faster gaming monitor but have not played this yet on this setup however I have played another timing sensitive game and the difference is massive in difficulty. This is not a review, just a comment on reviews noting this is very hard. This game is timing sensitive and if you don't have a gaming monitor or old school CRT monitor, the input lag and pixel response times make timing sensitive games almost impossibly hard on regular 60 hz lcd monitors. Linus Tech Tips recently did timing videos comparing how well professional FPS players did when using monitors with 60,144,240 hz refresh rates. There was minimal to no difference in player performances between 144 and 240 hz monitors which was somewhat surprising. Ideally OLED displays or TVs would be fastest but for unknown reasons the fastest 2019 LG OLED TV still has 13 ms input lag while the fastest gaming monitors are around 2-4 ms though these numbers are from different sources.

Best Platformer of all times.

This beats any platformer I have ever played. Even my childhood favorites are 2nd to this. The controls feel solid and even when you lose and need to start over, it still feels worth it. The feeling of constant improvement have made me continue improving through the game, as well as my desire to see more of the fabulous artwork. Despite dying a lot, it never felt punishing or frustrating. It has a perfect difficulty for me, not too easy, not too hard. The soft sweet spot for me. I also love some of the really odd, subtle references to cartoons, such a specific, opening of a particular b/w episode of Popeye. Absolutely love it! A wonderful game, that beats my previous favorites in almost every way.

Not for Causals

I made that title, not to be mean, but as a warning for those who don't play games but like the game's artstyle. You will get a nasty surprise. I've seen some people say that the game is not as hard as YouTube makes it. Those people are lying because they are WAY better at games than they wanna admit. And kudos for being modest about that, ignorant or otherwise. This game's difficulty is a bit of a throwback to games like Contra and Ninja Gaiden on the NES but without the limitations of the hardware that usually made those games unfair. And even though I died to some bullshit like not seeing an enemy/projectile thanks to the foreground blocking it from my view, at no point did I feel like the game was unfair. It gave me all the tools that I needed to win, I just had to prove to myself that I could do it. And I always found myself feeling accomplished when I saw the words KNOCKOUT come up on the screen. Still, there are a couple glaring roadblocks that prevent prefection. 1) The run-n-gun levels. Those are easily the worst additions in the game that are clearly an afterthought. But you have to do them to get coins so that you can get upgrades that will help. 2) This is a game that needs a controller to play. I've been working with the keyboard and there is no mouse support. While not impossible to beat, if I could use a traditional WASD setup with my Mouse, the game would be WAY more fun for me to control. Still that aside, I would easily recommend this game. Any game that gets me frustrated enough to hit the RETRY option instead of QUIT is fantastic in my book.
