Description
Convoy is a tactical roguelike-like inspired by Mad Max and FTL in which you cross a wasteland in search of parts for your broken ship.

Presented in pixel art and set in a future post-apocalyptic setting, Convoy is a squad based tactical roguelike-like in its core. You travel with your combat vehicles and convoy across a wasteland to find parts needed to repair your broken spaceship. During your journey you will encounter strangers in randomized scenarios by picking up radio signals.

Depending on the choices you make, signals can either lead to tactical combat, text based dialogue or chance based role-play. Whatever choice you make, you need to keep your convoy and its cargo safe from raiders, privateers and other enemies. Keep upgrading your vehicles, as death is permanent in Convoy.
  • A new take on tactical combat: Combat plays out in real time as a high-speed car chase where you need to position your units and use abilities to maximise their effectiveness.
  • Exploration pays: You will encounter many different radio signals, each with a text based event. What doesn’t kill you may reward you with loot.
  • Fully customizable units: Each unit can be upgraded and outfitted with different weapons and abilities, allowing you to customize them to your needs.
  • A randomized planet: Each play-through features different main and side objectives, events, choices, and different consequences to your actions.
  • A cold war turning hot: Three factions vie for control over the planet, your actions tip the scales of balance making you an enemy to everyone. As each faction grows in strength, you need to keep up.
  • Permadeath at the core: Knowing one wrong move could lead to certain death puts you constantly on edge.

Excelent

I love this game as i love FTL , its a really good game. As others already mentioned, it has much off FTL but is also different in many ways. As apposed to the linear gaming of FTL Convoy lets you explore freely the world map. You can explore as long as you wish and determine on your own wishes when the final battle starts. The Costemizationoptions of your vehicles are OK but there could be more variaty and i hope there will be a contentpatch for that. But the variaty of the game and the many ways of costemization are enough to play this game for hours and hours. The achievment system is also great!!! I say if you like rouge-like games than its definetly a buy!!!!

Welcome to Omek Prime!

...The post-apocalyptic wasteland full of land pirates, raiders, evil cyberpunk corporations and the greatest danger of them all... People who say to you something that sounds like some kind of pop culture quote from... something you never heard of... and look at you expectantly as you scramble to react. (I'm pretty sure the planet's name is a reference to Quarantine, an old video game featuring vehicular combat and set in Kemo City, a nice pace to visit... Or maybe not...) If relentless, sometimes obscure and somewhat repetitive pop culture references (you meet this planet's version of Walter White in every other playthrough) don't annoy you, and the fact that for a game that's supposedly about collecting a winning team of unstoppable war machines getting complete info on said machines is needlessly Byzantine might. Vehicles have model names, but those can be seen only in new game screen and in certain text events... That's it. One of your command truck's key stats (quest item capacity) can only be seen after the game started, you get only vague mention of it in a fluff piece you can read only on the start screen and nowhere else... Fortunately, really important stats aren't THAT convoluted to view, but there's a lot of missed opportunities to make vehicles more than bunches of stats here. I liked the "tactical side-scroller" combat mechanics, once you get the hang of it it really feels like a high-octane car chase, and pause button lets you to be clever about it. Unlike FTL, there's no "hard" time limit but as the game progresses fights get progressively tougher and riskier for the same reward, but overall, it's still much easier to grind up a decently armed and dangerous convoy and prepare for boss fights than in FTL (yes, there are bosses. Several of them.) Some of the quests can unfold very differently in different playthroughs, which is also nice. Overall, if you're ready to put up with nerdy references overdose and some rough edges in the interface, Omek Prime is a nice place to visit. And fly away from when you're done.

Does just enough wrong to be pointless

TLDR: The game has many nice things to offer, but the big picture is missing. So in principle, Convoy is pretty much like FTL, just not in space. You travel around with your spacesh... erm, convoy, which you steadily improve in random encounters and shops. You get money from making decisions in special events and fighting enemies in random encounters. Factions, shops and events are randomly placed in every new game. The differences hide in the details: you don't have a single ship with subsystems, but instead a convoy with vehicles. Ultimately, it boils down to the same mechanics, however. Sadly, while the game takes a different approach to many issues, it shares the same underlying problem: whether you win or lose is only up to the random number generator. In fact, many things the game does better just hurt so much more due to randomness. For example, the game lets you freely explore its map at any time. There is no advancing wall of doom driving you forward. However, this completely removes proper progression. There are no later levels with shops that sell better stuff, everything you can buy is randomized *once* at game start. Whether you are lucky to hit the about 10 shops in a sequence that is useful is then completely up to chance. In fact, whether there is such a sequence is completely up to chance. The worst problem however is that there is hardly any progress in the meta-game. This ultimately make replaying the game feel extremely pointless. In FTL, you could unlock radically different ships. Here, you just unlock a bunch different light vehicles, whose only purpose is to get scraped later on for heavier vehicles. But whether these are available or you just get stranded in the desert with no fuel is only decided by the random number generator...

FTL light-yet worse..

I was really looking forward to this one, because it looked like FTL meets Mad Max to me. What's not to love? Well, as cool as the premise is, for me, the execution is somewhat lackluster. When I started to play, the first thing that caught my attention was how it looks and feels. For me, it somewhat tried to mimic FTL in graphic design as well as sound, esp. with the atmospheric music. But it is simlpy not as well done on a technical level. Somehow the look of it feels somewhat unpolished to me, like a very complex flash game... That being said, the look wasn't FTLs strongest suit, so the mimicing of that style seems odd to me. But how FTL managed to create an atmosphere of urgency and isolation at the same time, mainly through its music, was amazing, and here, convoy fails once more. The tunes aren't as memorable or as iconic, and with their laid back tone, they don't match the frantic action in combat. Which brings us to the gameplay. It is broken up basically in exploration with the concoy itself on a world map, and random combat encounters, exactly like FTL...and like FTL, the combat is real-time, but can be paused every time. But it feels somewhat clunky, and seems not really deep. You have support units that shoot, you have your convoy that must be protected, that's about it, everything off course can be updated with better equipment, but somehow not with equipment that really adds to the gameplay and the level of strategics you can apply to any given situation. All in all, it feels very shallow compared to the thing it is trying to be. There are a few jokes and weird references here and there with sidequests, like seems to be the standard with this kind of game these days. All this being said- I do NOT entirely dislike the game. It is playable, in short bursts even a bit enjoyable, it just feels like a less-polished, badly made and entirely lesser version of a game that is already there. So why bother with this one?

Cool Premise, Lackluster Execution

I'm a fan of both FTL and Mad Max, so a game that combines elements of both sounded right up my alley. Unfortunately, this game does not live up to its potential. Everything about the game just feels slow and clunky, especially the combat. Battles pretty much just involve ordering your support vehicles around so they're in range of enemies, but they all move at a crawl and it just feels tedious. You can also buy upgrades to give your vehicles special attacks, but it's enough to actually give the fights any excitement. The premise is awesome, and there are some elements that work. Being able to roam around the map more or less freely and explore (as long as you have the fuel, of course) is nice, for instance. But as it is, it's just not very much fun to play. If they could find a way to make the combat fast and more exciting, then I'd give it a higher rating.
