Description
Finally, the threat of an atomic nightmare seems to be over. The equilibrium of terror that has held mankind under its spell for too long is about to lose its power. In CONFLICT: EUROPE we examine the diverse "what if ..." scenarios that have dominated world history for the past forty years.

In this gripping simulation, the player experiences seven different conflict situations. A comparison is made between the effects of nuclear and conventional weapon systems and the relationship between NATO and the Warsaw Pact is examined. The careful and realistic study of these scenarios in CONFLICT: EUROPE clearly shows that everything must be done to prevent such a nightmare.

FEATURES:
  • Represent either NATO or the WARSAW PACT.
  • Seven different conflict situations.
  • Full use of AWACS and reconnaissance.
  • Ground, Air, and Naval Forces included.
  • Range of nuclear and chemical fire plans
  • Special Forces raids.
  • Complex FSM based strategy system.

A GREAT strategy/wargame

Operational theatre as you can see by the pics. I used to play this a lot back in the day and I even made a short stream on it (the Atari ST version, but they are basically the same) I will link to in the end of this review. The game has you playing one of several scenarios, from either side of NATO or Warsaw Pact, during the 1980s. Basically WW3 in Europe. There is so much variety here for multiple playthroughs that it is a great value for money. It was great value for money even when it was a new game at full price. You are in charge of the side of choice and you give orders to each "unit"/"army" under your command. Each of them is made up of supplies, infantry, armor and close air support, from zero to 9. You have limited number of support points for each, for each turn. The number of support points, but also of starting armies and locations, depends on the scenario and on the situation in the war. You can check, among other information, the number of supplies you get each turn or are about to take, from one of the monitors on the bottom of the screen. Monitors which have other info and decision making, like use of special forces, use of the airforce, chemical and biological weapons and short, medium and long range nuclear weapons, both strategic and battlefield variety. You give orders to your armies where to move and where to attack. If close by and if in supply, you can order more than one army to attack an enemy. This way you can effectively flank, surround and cut off enemy forces, or not. It's up to you. The game has great atmosphere with a capital A. Especially of course if you were alive at the time. One of the best strategy games of its time and I 100% recommend it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-w7GAUtgPX4

Don't mind the picture on the box

The game is a classical NATO/USSR what-if wargame, you won't play cyborgs or madmax punkies. It's very simple, but ther is no nostalgy: The game is actually very good, have surprisingly almost great pleasure than 35 years ago on my AMSTRAD CPC. EDIT: However, JMayer70 in bottom reviews is not wrong.

A moral exercise

I played the game in the 90's in my Phillips 8088. The game is well done and fun for a while, but the overwhelming superiority of Warsaw Pact's armies limits the game to a moral decision when playing as NATO: shall I use the nukes? Once the nukes are used the game is pretty much done. And it's always the same. What-if scenarios are cool and give you a small chance to win when playing as NATO. Otherwise just play as Warsaw Pact and roll through NATO armies capturing all the way to Paris.

Souless, far inferior to Theatre Europe

Inferior to the Amiga and Atari ST version also. You cannot even target cities directly with nukes anymore. Nuke explosion graphics are laughable compared to what was on the C64! This version does have a bit more complexity under the hood, though mostly it is not very visible to the player - but it's still simplistic and repetitive. A theatre editor would have been nice, something I always yearned for on Theatre Europe on the C64, and it could have been done here. But that trick was missed. Bought hoping for nostalgia, left with disappointment. Unlike all the other praising reviews, I don't recommend.
