I never finished it but...
...nothing back in the 90´s could teach a 14y old kid to take out nazis as this legend. One of the best WWII games besides Hidden & Dangerous II.

An all time favourite
...And it still holds up well today. Very good squad based problem solving game. There's no modern game quite like this. It resembles XCOM in some aspects but I must say I prefer this game over the modern XCOM games. Challenging and very rewarding game, make sure to save a lot and learn all the features of the game and your squad members, you'll need it :p

Great, not excellent like the second one
Overall, I would definitely recommend the second game over this one. But with that said, there's still a lot to love here. Unlike many real time strategy games, this does not have any base building, nor do you train or build individual units. If the people you're in charge of die you lose the level rather than being able to simply replace them. You can essentially think of this game as an entire game made up of those Red Alert 1 and StarCraft 1 levels where you are inside of a building with a set team but with more focus on stealth. Each Commando has their own special abilities and tools there are certain weapons they can use that none of the others can, and in order to complete the game you have to master all of them. There's a good variety to the different ones no two feel like they're just the same. There's a lot of levels albeit certain of the early ones are fairly small almost serving to familiarize the player with certain Commandos. Over the course of them there are a bunch of different objectives including blowing up important German installations. It's very easy to pick up and play. The stealth is fantastic. Basically you have to hide from the line of sight of enemies. You can view the cone of the line of sight of any one enemy at a time. You wait for them to turn to look in another direction, maybe walk/patrol to somewhere else, then you get close, take them out silently, hide the body, rinse and repeat until you're able to complete the main objectives. The expansion pack is incredibly challenging. Others have pointed out that at times it is deeply unfair, tricking the player into wasting a resource early in one level that they'll need at the end, when really you could have just been given that resource shortly before needing it, or at the very least not have a setup that makes it appear that you should be using the resource early on. Great game if you can actually play it
This game does not work with modern computers, it needs Direct X 5 and this is a bit old I loved this game as a teenager, i would love to someday play it again. Maybe i have an old laptop with windows xp lying around that i can use becaus eon windows 10 and 11 i was not able to get around the directx 5 error

One of the all-time great games.
When I first played the demo Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines back in 1998, I knew I had found something special. The graphics were gorgeous. The controls and interface were effortless. The story and voice acting was excellent. Oh, and the gameplay was outrageously addicting. In essence, Commandos is a puzzle game. You need to use your men, each of which has his own special talents, to get from point A to point B. Then you blow point B up (or accomplish something similar). Along the way, you get to kill Nazis, and who doesn't love killing Nazis? I always have both Commandos BEL and BTCOD on my computer, just in case I need a fix. There are long levels, and there are short levels. There are easy levels, and there are difficult levels. Some levels require stealth, and some require brazen slaughter. All of them require some thought, and that's what makes Commandos so special. In short, this was probably the best computer game of the 1990s. Give it a whirl. Did I mention you get to kill Nazis?
