Clunky Hero - Antidote for Today's Times

This game is a funny Action Platformer / Side Scroller / Metroidvania with RPG and fighting elements in a fantasy world - being in early access. Pros: + Beautiful high-res graphics fitting to the story of a parody prince saving his princess from highest risk. + Precise controls (controller recommended) + Interesting enemies to fight (37 different types) plus 7 boss enemies + Diversified levels building a contiguous world to be explored + A fitting shortcut system for convenience and tactics alike + Seven atmospheric themed regions - perfectly fitting graphics/enemies (Dark Forest is great!) + Six Skills: Double Jump, Dive, Range Shot, Dash, Blasting Attack, and Cling, to make good progress and to support replayability of levels + Appropriate for passionate casual and hardcore gamers Cons (only mild ones): - While difficulty is OK, I would appreciate an easy or endless mode - Not yet redefinable controls, but no problems with defaults - controller was fixed (vers. 0.92) - Maybe some more hints (e.g. from NPCs) may be nice to give a direction to proceed - Currently only one save slot - which is said to be 3 when released which would be ok - Some minor bugs/shortcomings to get ironed out during early access (see Known Issues). For further info just visit GOG forum with Known Issues, Changelog and a big technical review. Conclusion: The game is already in quite polished state - in much more than 50 hours gameplay (first with initial GOG version 0.91 - then with 1st bugfix release 0.92) no showstopping bug emerged - playing with AMD (Zen 2 / RDNA1: Navi10) and Logitech Gamepad F310 under GNU/Linux with 31.5" at 4k. With some further polishing it could really become a five star game for what it is. I can recommend it - even in early access - for anybody liking platformers if graphics and this sense of humor matches your taste; for me it fits. :)

Good game with minor annoyances

Over all this was a nice game and a nice experience. Game story is nothing flashy but the parody keeps it fresh. I always loved narrators/characters who are aware they are in a game. There are items, maps, fast travel, character progression with visible changes and skills. Everything that a metroidvania-ish game should have. Movement and attacks are not that fluid. Coming from Ori and Hallow Knight it felt a bit clunky ;) Boss fights are mechanically not too challenging and they have limited amount of moves. Normal enemies are easy except the few (about 2) that are annoying as hell. I'm glad I play this. Thanks

Too clunky for it's own good.

It's a cute game with an endearing sense of humor. But the stiff controls, cheap enemy placement, unimaginative combat, sloggy bossfights, poor UI, questionable level design for a Metroidvania, and terrible mapping system, just drag this game down below the sub-mediocre level. Honestly, only play if you have already beaten nearly every other Metroidvania game in existence.

Not good

Has basic platformer hack-n-slash gameplay mechanics and controls, but the menu controls are horrible and completely unintuitive, compounded by the fact that some of the tutorial is just flat out incorrect. Story premise and writing are beyond lazy, saturated with "humorous" 4th wall breaks that just sound like the devs making excuses for how bad the game is. Most of the text boxes are also accompanied by annoying nonsense grunting noises (again, humor, I guess?), and despite having a dialogue volume option in the settings, it does not appear to effect the incessant grunting. (Nothing that the game considers dialogue was even encountered to even be able to test if that setting has an effect on anything, actually.) There's a reason most players can't even get through more than 3 hours/15% of this game. Calling this "clunky" would be giving it too much credit.

Decent Game With Too Many Flaws

This is one of those games that starts out a bit slow, but gets a little better over time, until the game takes a giant dump on you with its frustrating game design. Like the title says, the controls are a bit clunky, but you sort of get used to it over time. The problem comes in a little later when you have to retrace your steps through each "dungeon", which ends up become nothing more than a frustrating pain. I actually made it to the last stage in the game, but ended up giving up and uninstalling the game because of the frustrating controls and lack of health items. Believe me when I say that you will be EXTREMELY short of health by the end of the game, and you have no meaningful way of obtaining health items. This leads to repeated deaths and frustrating checkpoint placements that cause you to replay a section over and over and over again. It's not so hard that you can't make it through these sections, but I eventually reached the point where I basically didn't care anymore, and just give up out of frustration and boredom. I also wasn't a fan of the childish (and often sexual) jokes that were scattered throughout the game, which made it hard to play with my son. This could have been a modern classic with the right developer behind it, but it ended up being a very mediocre game with little reason to go back to it in the future. Worth picking up for $5, but nothing more.
