On linux at least, the game crashed, no matter what Wine Proton version I chose or command line arguments under Heroic.
This persistent crash was right at the start of the final boss level. Up until that time, through all main and side quests, no crashes.
Audio was crackly throughout. Never had these issues in linux before.
Crash popup message was...
Title: The UE4-SpacePrototype Game has crashed and will close
Message: LowLevelFatalError [File:Unknown] [Line: 3971] Retry was NOT sucessful.
I have it for years on the XBox, with the october sales i get it for PC, the game is even more beautifull.
one of the finest space game ever.
The history is fine, the handling is perfect and we even have RT in the seting...
This games looks nice, but picks far too many imperfections along the way.
The protagonist "duo" is flat AF, motivation is shallow, characterization is weak, they are as flat as an airstrip. Don't expect any connection with the protagonist/-s.
Story is almost non-existent, there is crutch that the game is leaning so that the game can happen.
Background is never explained in depth, just the minimum surface you need to understand the minimum amount of what is happening. The Circle - bad, Nara - former Circle assassin who is done running from her past. Enclave - good. That's it. No explanation or world building of how humanity expanded among the stars, how the tech works etc. Not that you needed it - it doesn't play ANY role. You might as well play an FPS, fantasy-RPG or any other genre and the story could "work" (and I use this word very loosely) the same.
Graphics - looks nice, no real complains here, lasers laser, explosions explode... Spectacle is sufficient.
Gameplay... is a mixed bag. For someone who is accustomed to insane button mashing with emphasis on quick reflexes, this is fine. There are many skills and maneuvers that you have to master into combination to beat the game on anything more than "easy". How do they work? "Magic." Just... no. And I am not talking about the barrel rolls and such. Don't look for a strategic and tactical fight here, reflex is everything.
I guess this is not my cup of tea and I shouldn't have expected anything else than this is - fantasy in space. With lasers.
Played this on another platform not GoG. I have played many space sims and never had an issue getting used to a control setup. Even something like Starlancer where you can use only the keyboard and no mouse and need 10 different keys to handle maneuvering and speed. In fact it might be my favorite setup due to the amount of control it gives you.
This game however is unplayable.
-Worst issue is the way you point the ship around. It is mouse controlled with a weird 2 rings setup where you need to go past the bounds of the ring to steer or your mouse does nothing and has some sort of delay between pointing and actually steering so it behaves like the game is lagging. Only way to make this even remotely controllable is to bind the ring to the most restrictive setting. However that removes some of the actual controls of the ship that work in the "dead" zone. Example follows:
-Problem 2 - Guns are firing where your mouse is pointing. In theory by controlling the steering rings size you have an inner circle where you can fire and move slightly in another direction. In practice your fire positioning and your steering are both bound to mouse position at the same time with no way to decouple them resulting in the ship steering in a direction you do not want to steer when you aim guns and aim being unusable when you steer because your fire position is not the center of the screen but your mouse that you have to move to the edge of the screen to steer putting your aim way off. If you use the tightest possible binding with the ship being so clunky you can't aim at all. Let me steer with keyboard and aim with the mouse if you want the aim not to be locked to the screen center or lock the fire position and let me aim with the mouse. Just not both, it does not work.
-Ship can only go forward. No backburner or reverse I could find. Good luck getting unstuck from corners if you get yourself there, which is way too easy indoors.
-For some unknown reason the ship is unable to move sideways properly.
-No way to avoid getting hit ether when enemies have sight of you, yet you need forever to actually turn toward your target and fire back. Turrets are especially big offenders.
Frankly this feels like the devs were afraid to let the players actually control their ships so the y put a ton of binds that are a detriment to the whole thing.
It's like this game is a bunch of badly mashed ingredients. Arcade shooter, superpowers, attempt at story. None of it is really good though. By the end I was so fed up with the religious psycho babble and forced goody-two-shoes that I started dreading every new dialogue.
Bad:
*cringe dialogues and sequences that cannot be skipped
*shallow main character that seems to have mind of a 10 year old
*camera that cannot be changed and gets into way more often than you would want
*repeating not-so-random encounters
*trying to be cool in the wrong way
*Loot classification into common, rare etc. which would be better if it was not there at all. Common this is not diablo and for the not even 100 items in the game it's more of a bad joke.
Good:
Somewhat decent shooter if you can suffer through all of the above.
