Hah! Well that was fun..

As someone who worshipped fps' back in the 90s, it is always nice to find one that I didn't get to here on GOG. This game is under six hours, and will pose no threat to any veterine of the genre even on Hard.. but what can you say - this thing was pretty fun! Staring blanky at the "plot" dialogue FMVs, fun.. shooting the arms off of monsters before they get a shot off... quite fun..... wondering what the hell the people who made this were thinking as you dance around a few odd locations... thats fun too. So yea, if you want a 90's fix, and support the dealers that slang those fixes to us... Give it a go, you'll have a nice little time. Honestly I just wish this thing has some multiplayer deathmatches, that too, would be quite fun.

Well done action game from classic era

I would place Chasm: The Rift somewhere in between Doom and Quake on one side and Hexen on the other. There is nothing revolutionary or unusual about this game, and moreover, in 1997 it was criticized for its "outdated" 2.5-dimensional looks. Furious and dynamic battles make this game similar to Doom. As in id’s masterpiece, opponents ambush the player, hit each other with "friendly fire", and the architecture is striking in its eclecticism. At the same time, the aesthetics of the game, and some opponents, look suspiciously similar to those from the first Quake. What connects the game with the Raven Software classic is the need to solve puzzles in order to advance. As Hexen, Chasm requires some spatial thinking and switch/lever-hunting (not as excessive as in Hexen 1-2, but certainly more than Doom). The second episode (set in Egypt) is the most heavy on puzzles. In general, I do not consider pseudo-3D to be something bad for the game, especially since the battles still require the player to be attentive and use the geometry of the level. The main thing I could find fault with Chasm is some linearity of levels (and also poor voice acting). The plot doesn't shine, but it is still secondary and symbolic as in other classic shooters of that era. These shortcomings are not too deciding, and this is a good and dynamic shooter.

Cozy Jank FPS

Short and sweet with solid mechanics that don't overstay their welcome. Location based damage, rock-paper-scissors style enemy attacks, Quake like visuals. While the price is a bit much, this is also a revival of a game that was barely known even in its own time. The remaster is done well with smooth movement, jumping, and added achievements that don't get in the way of the core gameplay. This is the type of remaster that should be encouraged. The original version is included as Dosbox as well for purists.

Fun combat, frustrating level design

I remember a friend of mine talking about Chasm when we were in grammar school and even though I never had a chance to play it before, this gave me an idea that the game may have some cult following. Seeing it re-released for a modern hardware, I guess I wasn't too far off. Overall the shooting is pretty fun and the game has a charming retro aesthetic mixed with some cool music and Quake-like atmosphere. The ability to dismember enemies before they go down is also a nice touch and can even give you some tactical advantage, especially when dealing with hit-scan enemies. However, what frustrates me a lot about this game, is just how cryptic it can get when it comes to level design. It's one thing to make the levels a maze-like puzzle that you just need to figure out, but Chasm often does things that just seemingly happen for no reason or are so obtuse that you can only figure them out by accident or with a guide. Like when I would enter a room with a locked gate that blocks the obvious way to progress, I'd run off to explore the surroundings and try to figure out what to do next, but once I stumble back around to the gate, it's suddenly opened, even though I didn't flip any switches or found any items. Or how about a level where the only way to open a door to progress further, is to destroy a snake statue that looked like just another decorative element of the level? It makes zero sense and the only reason I figured that out is because I was at a point where I started shooting at random things, mostly out of pure boredom and frustration. To put it another way, when you are forced to fall back on the "right-hand/left-hand rule" to try and find your way out of a maze, and it's only a fourth level in the game, then that should tell you as a developer that you've gone too far.

A fun time-jumping limb-cutting ride.

Developed by Ukrainian developers Action Forms (before they went on to famously work on a cancelled Duke Nukem game), Chasm: The Rift wears its Quake influence on its sleeve: 3D environments, dark ambient music, human enemies in the first levels that get replaced in favour of monsters of all shapes and sizes, etc. BUT, Chasm more than makes up for it with its level design, atmosphere, core gameplay and just plain feeling of claustrophobia. Chasm themes itself around twisted histories and time travel, with each episode taking on a different level style depending on which time period you're in. The atmosphere feels more like a gothic version of Tomb Raider rather than its inspiration, the levels are labyrinthine (in a good way) and packed with secrets, and you will get a lost a lot on your first playthrough. Thankfully, the gameplay is fun and makes it worth it. Chasm was one of the first FPS games to use a dismemberment system, and although not as detailed as Soldier of Fortune's years later, it's so much fun to strategically dismember your enemies, be it removing their arms or legs. The weapons are also good, too. So yeah. As one of the games that influenced the modern Boomer Shooter movement (Hrot, but Dusk took influence from it too), Chasm: The Rift is worth looking into. It's simple, but fun. And the dismemberment alone is satisfying.
