I haven't enjoyed a jrpg or such game since chrono trigger when i was kid so that's something, there is something magical in this game i can't quite understand but everything is perfectly chained together in chained echoes, from graphics style to storytelling and music, love it cheers!
And I'm glad I didin't because Chained Echoes is an amazing jRPG.
Pros:
- it is seriously impressive that this was done by mostly one person
- it borrows heavily from Chrono Trigger, FFVI, IX, XII, Suikoden etc
- it has a lot of quality of life improvements like autosaving, fast travel and even quest log
- no random encounters and no grinding
- specialized party members
- You regenerate HP & MP after each fight, which encourages all out battles where you don't have to worry about conserving your resources
- world map while seemingly small, has a TON of locations
- there is plenty of side content to do, including optional hard bosses and side quests
- plenty of enemy models - no recolors
Cons:
- there are a lot of systems in the game, but I'm afraid that some are not really fleshed out
- crystal system and UI is overly convoluted and too random to be useful
- some character portraits look laughable or unfinished. One of main characters has such a dull face that it was hard for me to take him seriously
- many characters are optional and join your party very, very late
- as I'm writing this there are still occasional bugs, softlocks etc.
Overall it was an amazing experience and a true surprise at the end of the year
8+/10
As an old gamer, I cut my teeth on the original Final Fantasy series, starting with the NES and then SNES, along with the Phantasy Star series on SMS and Genesis.
Chained Echoes is deep in its character stories, unique(ish) combat syste, with the advent of the Overdrive mechanic, wonderfully scored, and amazingly pixelated giving the player that 16-bit feeling of nostalgia while having a new world to play around in.
I am 17 hours in, and only have completed 19 percent of the achievements. The game feels massive, yet travel is quick, even in walking (kudos to the devs for having running speed be normal walking!). The characters, even though they have a generally defined role, are very customizable to fit your play style.
The devs have an amazing opportunity for a franchise here (ala the Trails series). The lore describes a vast world outside of the continent you are on. It may be that the game takes you to the rest of the world, but the way the other land masses were described, if we traverse the whole of the world, then this game is much more massive than I initially thought. Though, on second thought, it is implied that there is an airship in the future, so who knows, LOL.
I took off 2 points for not being able to pull up notes/books the party reads for hints and tips (outside of the amazing mapping system), as well as the lore.
The other 2 points taken off were due to the tropes in the game, where, though tried and true for the most part, can have only a slight touch of wishing for a 'new' story. Though, since this is a game rooted in nostalgia from amazings titles in the 80s and 90s, this is only a very minor tweak of my want for a new trope.
I am looking forward to more JRPG from this dev, amazing title, right price. Chef's Kiss!
TL;DR - Put in cart, click cart, click purchase now, install, enjoy - Go! What're you waiting for!
Chained Echoes is the first game in a long time to really surprise me. Made by one person, Chained Echoes is a love letter to the JRPG genre, specifically the SNES era. It takes all the tropes, story beats and gameplay that we know and love, but cuts out all the fat that makes the genre unappealing to some.
If I had to describe it, it's essentially a mix of Chrono Trigger, Suikoden 2, Xenogears and FF6 but with it's own unique aspects to keep things fresh.
Pros:
-Fantastic pacing. The story never got boring, and there was little to no filler. Things just kept going and never stopped until the game was over.
-Good crafting system and character building.
-Amazing QoL. Health + Mana restores after every fight, guaranteed escapes, many difficulty options, waymarks for most quests + a quest log.
-Good story and lore, with potential for a sequel.
-Unique combat system that makes you be careful about the skills you use, and when you use them.
-Fair bit of side content and post game content
Cons:
-Mech Battles. The mech system in this game is boring, and you're constantly forced to fight bosses with them. The standard combat system is great but the mechs are dull and weak with little customization.
-Poor english translation. I don't know if it was machine translated but the english dialogue really isn't great and does bring down the story a bit.
-Weird balancing. The standard enemies in the game are tougher than the bosses, and the bosses are really easy.
-The ending. The rest of the story was fine but the ending is genuinely horrendous. It's poorly set up, makes no logical sense and it left a really bad taste in my mouth by the time the credits were finished.
Overall, Chained Echoes is a game worth playing if you love the JRPG genre. While it has it's flaws (if the ending was better I might have given it 5 stars), it's still well worth the price. Main story + most of the side quests took me ~ 27 hours.
The trailers for this game always looked good and I went into it thinking oh this will just be a fun little thing to play but actually getting into it everything just syncs up so well enough nostalgia and refinements to it to make it amazing addition to anyone library.
I'm still in the early game and haven't gotten all the companions, airships, or mechs yet but wow is it good.
Trying to reach and maintain over dive without overextending and over heating adds a little extra to the combat and makes it more engaging.
A few of the fights have had extra modifiers or things to manage to keep you on your toes too.
There's a lot of love that went into this and is easy to see.
