repeat CTP 2 + Apolyton Mod = best

repeat CTP 2 + Apolyton Mod = best Civ ever I like the combat in this game, you can have 8 vs. 8 unit battles. You feel like Napoleon or Alexander the great fighting with big armies. I think the con in other reviews is that the opening movies glitches and between turns or combat there can be a small graphic glitch, and there could be wonder movie glitches. I think as long as the game doesn’t crash the small glitches don’t matter. I haven’t built many wonders so I can’t speak to that. I also like when you conquer cities you keep the old civs architecture. Which gives you very unique original looking empires. I don’t see how I will play CIV 2 MGE or Civ 3 more than this game.

Powerfully bland.

Having seen this on sale I thought, what the hell and took the plunge. And I now remember why I sold it way back when it first came out. The game lacks any personality, and fulfils the cliche of strategy games being little more than pretty spreadsheet managers. There is certainly plenty of potential, and a myriad of different playstyles suitable for any sort of leadership style, however whether you can tolerate the sheer boredom and lack of interaction to actually get to that point is the biggest challenge present. The AI is woeful and with little to differentiate the separate players from each other their is no emotional involvement. Hell even Civ 1 realised the importance of being able to distinguish between oponents. A below average strategy game and clearly the worst civilisation game (Yes, OK, its not officially a civilisation game!)

Response to Cor's Review

The Call to Power series was developed by Activision after they won the legal rights to Avalon Hill's "Civilization" name for their product away from Microprose (for who Sid Meier worked at the time before splitting away and creating Firaxis, which produced Alpha Centauri, the spiritual successor to Civilization II. The CTP series was NEVER seen or touched by Sid Meier, and instead this series is the reason that SMAC did not bear the title Civilization. It could also have been a small part of the death of Microprose. Now that I have exclaimed the truth for you all, this game is fairly decent if you've played all the other Civ games and wanted to try something new but the same. It is still a far cry from the quality of the Sid Meier series.

Somehow not as good as CTP1

I have to say I enjoy CTP2 and although I prefer the Sid Meier's series more as a whole I often find myself returning to CTP simply because it feels more fun. Yet out of the two CTP games I have to pick the first. Something about 2 got on my nerves. Perhaps it was the fact that the news screen was completely overhauled which meant instead of icons on the left telling you the latest news from around the world it instead insisted that you click on a tab on the bottom right and read through all the news squeezed into a little window. The former ensured that any boring and unneccesary news could be ignored unlike the civ series. Perhaps it was also the fact that 2 made things too grounded and instead of discovering the meaning of life through growing an alien you instead had to spend an obscene amount of time building Obelisks in the middle of nowhere costing thousands of public works for every one. Perhaps it was that the bugs that were annoying but were nevertheless fun aspects of the original were removed. No longer did you have an AI throw a revolution because you built too many cities. No longer did you have to micromanage your military to avoid a tank being wiped out by a horde of warriors. No longer was the fantastic dream future filled with utopian ideals and hopes. Sadly due to licensing it is unlikely that CTP1 will ever be realeased on GOG and it is a crying shame because I would certainly sell a kidney to buy it through here.

Prepare for many sleepless nights...

Just like its predecessors, CTP games are massive and time consuming. But hey, that's why we love them! I really liked the steamlines, which were introduced in CTP 1, and though at first I was furious for taking the Space colonization out of the gameplay, later I found it a good streamlining. The AI was criticized, yet, it has some good moves. I must admit, it uses sometimes blantant cheating, especially in the case of wonders. But even on easy levels it utilizes spies and slavers, defends the cities adequately, attacks with combined force, pillages tile improvements, and pirates trade routes. Though there is the possibility of dplomatic victory, it is pretty shame, that the diplomacy, as a function is quite useless. No matter, what wonders do you have, no matter, what tone you speak, usually the AI understands only the language of force. There's no room for subtle gameplay, go for outnumbering, outgunning, and outteching, and after conquering a few cities (preferably the capital) of them, they will get off from the high horse. Apart of that, it's a must-have game!
