I really enjoy this gem. This was the final installment of the series (as far as I'm aware) and is the best of them. The story starts with a old gunslinger going into a small town and people start asking who he is when he enters a saloon. He claims that he is a famous bounty hunter and begins to tell different stories of famous outlaws he had killed throughout his career.
The gameplay is smooth and fun. It has a arcade feel to it (in a good way) that keeps you coming back for more. You have a small skill tree to help you play the way you like. The graghics hold up nicely but can still run on a toaster. If you like feeling like your a badass cowboy out for vengence, this game does a good job. I highly recomend if your into single player shooters.
The coolest thing about this is probably the way that aspects change as the first person narrator changes details in the retelling. It does legitimately let you experience a lot of cool Western legends. Some of them are just pointless name drops but others do the thing that they’re infamous for and you are sometimes tasked with trying to stop them. The only positive thing I can say at all about the duel mechanic is that if you play the story mode it doesn't force it upon you all that often. I would definitely avoid the mode that is purely made up of those. Almost everything about the duels is frustrating. Probably my biggest issue with this is the fact that too often enemies blend into the background. This is obviously a problem for a game that is about you being able to spot them and open fire on them. I just feel like Where's Waldo shouldn't be an FPS. There's too little variety to the guns. I never found myself actually using a shotgun. I appreciate that they were trying to only go by what was available at the time and seemingly they also didn't want you to be able to pick up a tomahawk or a bow and arrow even as you see others use those. But they could still have done better. I haven't played the first three. It sounds like the first two are substantially better. I do not know why they dropped a bunch of features from those for this. It honestly seems like a very ill advised decision. The skill tree is nowhere near as satisfying and gameplay evolving as Dead Island by the same developer, a game that overall is inferior to this but definitely does provide much more engaging gameplay. I played all the way through the campaign of that three times not starting over mind you keeping intact all of the upgrades and such but still. This I doubt I'll play even a second time. The plot is paper thin. The ending feels too obvious and so much of this you spend bounty hunting but without the world building of Thief: The Dark Project which is also largely a series of jobs.
Word of warning, Ubisoft seems to be the publisher of this game, regardless of what the store page says. However, you don't need their rubbish software to play it.
Call of Juarez Gunslinger takes us back to the wild west following the steps of Silas Greaves, mighty bounty hunter. Along the way you'll encounter the classic legends such as the Dalton brothers, Jesse James, Yves Guillemot... You know, all those filthy, good-for-nothing scoundrels that were leeching off hard-working citizens and were later on romanticised by Hollywood and shills.
While this is not a quadruple... *dramatic pause*... no, quintuple-A quality video game, it's fantastic and I absolutely recommend it. The gameplay is fun, the narration's got a pinch of humour, and it's got some truly challenging fights. There are 3 game modes: Story, Arcade, and Duels. Story is self-explanatory; it has replay value, as you can upgrade your skills with XP and change your playstyle. Arcade is about shoot, shoot, shoot and trying to max on points by chaining as many kills as you can. Last, but not least, duels will give you 5 lives and you need to get through a series of duels and get the highest score... Of course, "AAA" will be the top scoring player everywhere.
Something I'd really like to highlight about CoJ:G is the fact that you can find what they call "nuggets of truth" with the real stories or known facts about these characters and other miscellaneous aspects of the old west. This is a really neat feature, as at least the ones I found tend to stick to facts and present them to the player - no lecturing or politicised discourse.
As the one negative point, I want to bring up that the story telling sometimes interferes with the player. If I'm fighting a bunch of enemies and in the meantime the narrator and other characters are talking, either I'm going to listen to the story and mess up the gunfight, or I'll focus on the fight and not really pay attention to whatever they're talking about. 9/10
It's the gun handling and the gameplay that are really fun! The story is also told in a very entertaining way. Overall it's a fun arcade shooter in the style of western comic books. I recommend giving it a shot ;)
The "Call of Juarez" series has always occupied that unfortunate 'almost good' space in the FPS genre, never really reaching the AAA polish, and nevery really compensating for it with very good gameplay. That was until "Gunslinger", which is an incredibly fun mid-budget affair with some decent humor, quick-paced shooting and cool cell-shaded graphics. It was released to little fanfare, but I think it's easily one of the best shooters of the 2010s, and perhaps the most fun shooter of 2013 alongside Far Cry: Blood Dragon. Seeing as you can now buy it dirt cheap, I'd say give it a try even if western is not really your genre.
