There was a dark time for shooters while Call of Duty ruled the genre. Most were super linear, very bland and very slow moving and static. When Gunslinger originally came out it was a breath of fresh air. It was colorful, more fast-paced and more interesting. It has immensely satisfying fun mechanics with real weight, and while the levels aren't open worlds or anything they don't feel like straight corridors either.
It still definitely shows signs of console-focused development of course. And now that singleplayer shoots have gone through a bit of a creative resurgence with Doom 2016 and great indie titles like Dusk and Amid Evil it might not feel as important and miraculous as it did at the time. However it still holds up as an entertaining shooter with solid mechanics and great visual design. If you're interested in westerns and good gunplay, give it a shot.
It's worth noting that Field-of-View cannot be changed in the options menu (Although the default 82.72° horizontal can be a comfortable setting, values between 80°-110° horizontal can be chosen via config, with Viewmodels changing with them without fault!), and it sports a stylised comic-panel border during gameplay that may prove obnoxious or even obstructive to players. Plus, Anti-Aliasing is off by default and Anisotropic Filtering cannot be adjusted in the options menu. Thankfully, it's only a couple of very swift & easy config edits to change/resolve them, then you're good to go! The game's PC Gaming Wiki article has what you need.
A few personal recommendations of mine are if you're going in on your first run & want to enjoy the narrative (It's a pretty enjoyable unreliable-narrator's tale), switch 'Points Visualization' to 'Arcade Only' (If not 'Off' outright) so you can blast cowboys away with only blood spraying from their wounds instead of the accompanying points, scores & combos that can make the game a rather informationally busy experience.
You can also set 'Duel Counters' to 'Duel Challenge'/'Off' to tackle duels without potentially distracting Focus & Speed percentages, but these are quite the trial & error moments, so I left them on myself.
A less common treat is the Crosshair can be disabled too, but note as you aim duel-wielded weapons Killing Floor style (And the crosshair does also represent when your accuracy's transition from hip-to-sight's made, letting you pull of some well timed reflex shots with precision, particularly if you're starting a new game without the accumulation of Skill Upgrades and their numerous related benefits), so leaving it on presents useful information, but I'm all for turning it off.
On the whole, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a short initial experience, but for the smaller price it asks for, it gives back it's worth, if not maybe more than you might expect.
To make it clear: This game has one of the most entertaining story presentations I have ever experienced in a shooter. You play from the retrospective of an old gunslinger, who debates and revokes his memories with an audience, a bit like in the Action RPG Bastion. AND IT IS PERFECT! I had to smile a lot and wonder why so few games use a storytelling device like that.
The pacing of this game is nice, sometimes you have time to explore, sometimes theres an action packed sequence, often by surprise, and some tense cover shootouts, few times waves of enemies closing in. The latter become more towards the game's final chapters, but are also used as a way to show how overexaggerated the gunslinger remembers his adventures, even facing the ghosts of dead outlaw legends at times. You get almost Spec Ops The Line vibes through it, questioning the kills you made, the amount of dead bodies you leave behind. As the gunslinger and as the player. Everyone should finish the short yet very beautiful gem of an early modern shooter.
I got this game on sale... along with the first two Call of Juarez games. This one is BY FAR my favorite of the series. Honestly after playing it I don't think the original price is too high, though. It's a great buy, and a steal on sale.
Take on the roll of an old bounty hunter who spends the whole game telling half-truths about his grande past adventures. You are essentially reliving his adventures, the truths and the lies, as he recounts to his bar-mates what all he accomplished in his youth.
The voice acting is super entertaining and has actually made me laugh out loud at times. So much cliche, but so believable because I imagine everyone knows someone who is an exaggerator, and the main character definitely plays the part well!
Not only does the story shine, but the game-play as well. I usually am not one for First Person Shooters, but a western theme is the perfect format for one. This game has grabbed my attention in the worst way. I found myself up till 2:30 a.m. playing this gem. The movement is fluid. Linear levels, but you don't feel claustrophobic at all as you are usually given a wide range of movement within them. The accuracy of the shooting is great as well.
Top all that off with great music, sound effects, and a pretty powerful upgrading system, and you have a winner here that does everything promised by the store-page. That's why I gave this game 5 stars.
If a game does what it claims then it should be given a good rating. This game excels at it's mission. Give it a try and you won't be sorry.
This is a severly underestimated game. I love it... and is a game I pick up for yeat another session over and over again. But if this style of game isn't your cup of tea, I'd still suggest you at least try it. Some of you might be suprised. And this is a game that is sorely missing a sequel... if they expand this, then they basically have Red Dead in reach. Not that I expect them to take my pleas to heart.
