Cute, but................

I played this for 4 hours yesterday, and I think that for this game that's a decent amount of time to give an objective review. PROS: Cats. Pudgems is particularly adorable. Petting the cats/animals is so cute. Some of the best character customization I've ever seen. I can have pink/mint/blue skin? AWESOME. Body positivity! YAAASSSS curvy queens! LGBTQ characters! I'm a straight ally but I love representation. This game is what I call "soft baby no fight." It's low impact, no battle. You can easily mute the game to listen to music or watch TV while playing with no game impact. CONS: The controls. OMG the controls. The camera does not auto-rotate as many games do. This is more similar to WoW controls. You will constantly have to rotate the camera as you move or you'll be staring at a wall, a tree, etc. Clipping. So much clipping. The furniture placement controls are odd and unintuitive. Inventory for furniture is a little strange, too. Trying to use the gradient color for character furniture customization is difficult. The game clearly wants you to go to sleep at some point, but doesn't have any penalty for not doing so other than that quests that need to be completed the next day don't update or trigger. That's minor, I realized quickly I have to force my character to sleep, but I'd say it's not intuitive. It can be difficult to tell how to best optimize your funds as you do not have to be at the cafe to make a profit. That's also minor. I may keep trying to play this because I like the animals, I like quests, I like having tasks to do that don't necessarily involve conflict or battle. If you can get over the controls and clipping, the rest should be easy to adjust to.

Sympatique, mais ...

Calico est un jeu "tout plein" de douceur, de chocolats et cafés chauds, de gâteaux et de tartes, et … de tout plein d'animaux mais surtout de chats à papouiller ! "Peachy Keen Games" nous signe un jeu qui vise clairement les joueurs occasionnels, et principalement les filles, avec un mélange de genres qui donne un peu de variété dans le gameplay. Contenu. 🟢 Le joueur aura une aventure pleine de missions, l'exploration de l'île est de mise, la préparation de recettes de cuisine, différentes magies / meubles / vêtements à débloquer, et surtout la gestion (si on peut dire) et l'aménagement d’un café à chats ! En bref, "Calico" offre pas mal de possibilités pour un si petit jeu. 🟢 Plusieurs styles graphiques sont possibles. 🟡 La durée de vie est assez courte. 🔴 Malheureusement, le jeu accuse d'un manque de vie dans cet univers, et d'activités. Image. 🟢 Le graphisme étant très "simpliste" de par sa D.A. au style "dessin animé / BD", les temps de chargement sont très courts. 🟡 Le graphisme et la D.A. donnent un titre qui conviendra à qui veut se relaxer (pas fait pour moi); ma femme a adoré. Audio / texte. 🟢 Le jeu est en Français (si la version GOG est à jour) au niveau des textes. 🟡 Les musiques sont mignonnes, mais redondantes et oubliables. 🟡 Pas de doublage pour les personnages, mais c'est un jeu indépendant à petit budget. Gameplay / performances. 🟢 Rapide à prendre en main, que ce soit à la manette ou au clavier/souris. Cela dit, le jeu est totalement optimisé pour manette. 🟢 Très léger, le jeu est stable et tournera sur tous (ou presque) les PC. Bref. Avec son mélange de genres et sa D.A. toute mignone, "Calico" fait penser à un mix entre "Animal crossing" et un "RPG lite". Il pourra trouver son public chez les joueurs occasionnels et les "gameuses".

Cute little game

Casual calm game where you inherit your aunts cafe and can go around gathering up to ten animals (not all animals - there is no cafe animal storage expansion). You also run around meeting & doing quests for the locals. You can also make food for your cafe, it is an interesting cooking sequence where you shrink down onto the bench top and run around springing off of spoons gathering ingredients that you need (like eggs from the open fridge or sugar from in the pantry above - accessed by a funny tiny elevator I didn't see at first). Not too bad, pretty neat if you like chill short-ish games and animals. As you help the locals and do quests for them, you open up new areas. There is also a giant cat blocking the way to some areas with it's big but. You also get to ride many of the regular animals around the place (near the beginning of the game one of the npc's gives you a shrink/enlarge animals (except birds) potion- you can mount them when they are larger size generally :) Funny little feature but I enjoyed it. To me, the game has it's charms. Not a high learning barrier, which I like. It's nice to just jump into and play.

Cute casual game, play with animals...

This is a casual game about exploring a magical island, decorating and finding animals for your cat cafe, and helping your neighbors. The quests are simple and I would have preferred more writing, but the animals are the focus of the game and it is the kind of game that encourages imagination. As is often the case in games, the presence of stores is just strange considering the setting. I played about 9 hours to finish all of the quests and usually take longer than most, although in this type of game it will vary quite a bit (and I'll still spend more time playing with the animals). In terms of mood, I found this game similar to A Short Hike, although it isn't nearly as polished as that game and is more casual (no timed races would be possible in this one since the terrain isn't that detailed, but you get to pet and play with animals). It seems to be the first game from a small developer and has a number of low budgetness aspects. Hopefully the developer will make improvements after release, however it is quite playable (unlike many larger budget games at release). I made a spoiler-free list in the forum of some issues and solutions. There are a bunch of graphical oddities that took some getting used to, but with some imagination it was fine for me. I enjoyed the watercolor art style. The trailer is currently showing cake decorating that isn't in the game so it seems the cooking mini-game (my least favorite part) was a last minute change. The soundtrack by Slide20XX is available on Bandcamp. It does ok at setting the mood but is nothing special IMO (and is too repetitive like most game music). The one song I like is the song in the trailer with vocals by Emily Anderson that plays once each morning. Overall, I consider it one of my favorites and hope to see more games like this here and more games from this developer. There is another fun cat cafe themed game by a different small Seattle developer, a visual novel called Hustle Cat.

Living My Best Cat Life

This review is based on the itch version, which should be the same as the GOG version. The primary difference is that the GOG version will have a proper installer. While I did encounter a few bugs, none were particularly game breaking. If something seems broken - animal stuck on your head that you cannot remove (for example), you really just need to press the Esc key to bring up the menu then select the "save and exit" option. Once back on the title screen, just continue, and the game should have fixed itself. This game really does everything it claims to. The character creation is more extensive than shown in the store page screen shots. You also have the option to return to it at any time if you want to tweak your character's appearance or if you have a new piece of clothing. You can hang out with a bunch of different animals: bears, dogs, horses, foxes, pigs, and especially cats. The ten animal limit for the cafe might not seem like much until you have ten animals in your cafe plus furniture and human patrons. The animals really are all interactive where you can pet them, follow you around, go to your cafe, etc. The cooking mini game felt a little wacky. My only real complaint with this game is that you can only have up to six items on display no matter how many display cases you put in the cafe. Also the run animation is a bit odd, but this is easily fixed by riding around on a giant cat everywhere. If your familiar with WASD to move plus using a mouse to look around, the controls should feel familiar.
