A great HARD tactical FPS

Set in WWII, this FPS will give you plenty of chances to share your feelings with deities or with the son of someone's mother. The game is hard. Not entirely due to built in difficulty, but because it requires a total different mindset to any other FPS released till then (or since then). Calling this game just a FPS is like calling Gran Turismo a kart racing game. You will not be able to play and finish this game if you try to play like a lone wolf. AFAIK it can't be done. You will need to use tactics. You will need to command your troops (easy to do in game) to flank or suppress enemy positions. If you try to do it on your own you will have your character die and "stuck" in the same mission for ever. The game gives you the tools by use of easy commands (aim on the enemy position and choose the command) to have your troops help you. You can do this either in the first person view, aiming the enemy position and picking the right command, or by using the in game tactical map, pressing a key to bring the map and then from a top down view give the command. Not that you can just give orders and not dirty your hands. Oh no, you will have to do most of the shooting yourself. Shooting which is satisfying. The campaign is long and gritty. The game is fun. This is the thinking man's FPS, without becoming a (personal opinion) borefest of the first few Rainbow Six games where you felt you were doing more planning than shooting. This is the first game in the trilogy and it is the hardest one. Depending on how you feel about FPS games you will either love it or not so much. IF you are looking for a closer "arcade" action then get the third game. I do believe though this game is a gem and should be played by all lovers of WW2 video games. I give it a 4/5 stars.

A sad, hard journey with good gameplay

Brothers in Arms retells the week of blood soaked fighting through Normandy through a squad of paratroopers just trying to survive. It very heavily takes notes from Band of Brothers, but its largely a good thing with decent characters and (for the time) voice work. It's gameplay is fairly dated by modern standards but the attention to details be it the quiet french farms and streets, the stark noise of gunfire, explosions knocking you over or the reenactments of battles like Cole's Charge keeps the linear singleplayer campaign still an enjoyable tour. For its price (thanks GOG), its easy to recommend to casual WW2 and tactical shooter fans

Cool WWII game

This is going to be a bit tough being that I'm reviewing a game that is 10+ years old. But here I go... Right off the bat the graphics, soldier interaction, and overall storyline (which is a true story) are great and engrossing. I'm used to playing FPSs on PS consoles. The controls were surprisingly very easy to get accustomed to. You also have the ability to change any control you want. The missions are relatively long, some being tougher than others. At times I feel like me and my squad(s) are too outnumbered, but that's war. Speaking of the squads, their AI is...okay. At times they put themselves too far out in the open, even if I place them in a safe zone. The ability to command squad(s) to suppress and fire is very cool; though it can be tough placing them in certain spots sometimes. I read on someone's review you can command through the situational awareness mode -- I was not aware of this, and thanks for pointing it out. Despite your squads inefficiencies at times, you will need them to complete your goals/missions. There have been a few instances where I went full "me-mode" (Either because my squad died or weren't helping much) and got lucky and survived. I play in Normal mode so I can't see that happening on tougher modes. Additionally, when you complete missions you earn a medal depending on the level of difficulty. This unlocks cool Extras -- cool feature. My final point I'll make involves Baker's (you) shooting. I'll have Germans suppressed, flank them, and have a Great shot on them. I shoot, and the Krauts miraculously are able to take the bullets and get up from their position and be on the attack. I hate when this happens, but perhaps it's due to the age of the game. Also, keeping scope of fire at a relatively steady spot is difficult. Point is, it shouldn't be hard to eliminate a suppressed enemy with a few shots. Perhaps I just stink at the game haha. Overall I'm giving 4 stars due to the storyline, tactics, and graphics.

They don't make them like this any more!

The Four Fs: Find em, fix em, flank em, finish em! What really set Brothers in Arms apart from the likes of Medal of Honor and Call of Duty was it's tactical approach. You must use planning and squad tactics to overcome the enemy. Running and gunning will only get you and your men shot full of holes, and there is no healing. At all. If you are shot during a mission, there is no replenishing yourself, or your men. You'll be using your head just as much as your trigger finger. The satisfying gameplay isn't the only draw here, Excellent visual presentation for a game released in 2005, combined with a painstaking attention to historic detail. You also get a compelling story, along the lines of HBO's Band of Brothers. Lastly, you get a wealth of historical documentation, photographs and behind the scenes features as unlockables, ensuring you'll want to try and beat the game on the higher difficulties. This and its sister game "Earned in Blood" are must own games!

Difficult but satisfying

This game is 15 years old and you have to take that into account when playing. The graphics are no where near today's raytracing efforts. That said, they're still adequate for a FPS. The game is broken down into action elements (where you play the game) and cut scenes (where the overall story is progressed). The real beauty of this game is in the gameplay - if you want to win without losing any of your men you have to embrace the concept of "fix, maneouvre, fire" - use your support team to pin down an enemy group, manoeuvre your fire squad into a position to hit the enemy from the side and then fire on them to wipe them out. It seems simple (and at the start it is) but later in the story it becomes really hard to do as the enemy also shift positions to counter you. The Band of Brothers trilogy of games are the hardest games I've ever played on PC (on the highest difficulty level and with trying to beat the game without losing any of your men to get achievements). Save points are few and far between. You can play half an hour and almost reach your goal and then realise you've lost a man or two. You can continue and forfeit the achievement or go allllll the way back to the last save point. It can be heartbreaking to have to replay a long stretch of the game but finally achieving a progression through the mission without losing anyone is oh so satisfying - it's literally a fist in the air "F@ck yeah!!" moment. It's rare to get that in most of today's games. At just over £1 you can't go wrong in buying this game if you're interested in WWII FPS games. Be prepared for a different experience then the usual "you're the invicible hero" scenarios, though, as you'll need to master how to use your fire and support squads. I've played virtually ever WWII FPS game going and this series remains my favourite despite the years passing. Oh for a Band of Brothers 4 using today's technology....
