Cool.

Conspiracy, secret society, world domination, etc are essential for good thriller. Broken Sword, though deal with those elements, are not dark or gloomy but funny. Quite hilarious mood flow naturally through its plot. Also, if you stuck with some point, you can access hint and do exactly what required current situation(That's the best point in this game. 'cause I always stuck while playing other adv game, waste time for solutions :) ). Although you must play puzzle almost every scene of game(plus repairing something), and whole plot of antagonists are broken off by just mere American tourist is littile bothersome and bizarre :). But this game is cool, fun, and worth playing.

A bit short...

it took me 5 hours to beat this game. The story is interesting. The characters are moving a bit too slow imo. There are some challenging riddles in the game. I bought it in the bundle so I will expierence the whole story what I recommend to do. Because the broken sword games are till now a bit short. I played the 2nd game 2 hours an completed nearly 50% of the game. I dont think this game has any replay ability imo. Maybe if you forgot the story or want to play really badly a classic adventure. The game length could stretch a bit if you take yourself more time with the riddles not like me. I recommend this game for people who want to play an adventure game with an interesting story.

Downright Delightful

Based on other reviews, I downloaded and played the original version of the game, not the remaster. This review is based on that. I'll start with the negatives: 1. Music. This game makes poor use of background music. As in, every once and a while, a scene will have some background music. Otherwise you're walking around the majority of this game in relative quiet. They lost an opportunity for increasing the immersiveness of this game here. 2. Speed. The game just takes forever to move around places. Your character is about the slowest walker on the planet, with no way to speed him up... and he has to walk around EVERYWHERE. Its a bit frustrating. 3. Graphics. I wasn't a fan of the Disney/Cartoony Graphics. I prefer attempts at more realisim. Just my personal taste here. 4. Ending. It doesn't really have any concluding scenes. The game just kind of ends suddenly on you. And... that's it. After those four points, this game was perfect. The entire world was just very immersive and pulls you in. The story line was engaging and continually leaves you wanting to know what happens next. The characters were thoroughly developed, allowing you to connect with them. The world unfolded in a very well-planned manner, where there was always something new to explore, but you never felt overwhelmed by everything at once. The puzzles were challenging but manageable, and only once required exhaustive clicking. No, it wasn't the infamous goat puzzle, which I found greatly exaggerated in difficulty [solved in about 10 minutes]. The harder puzzle was what to do with a dirty bar of soap. I don't know what more I can say... I loved this game. I'm picky what ever gets 5 stars, and this got it. Highly recommend.

Play the remake second... if at all.

I had never played either before, so I started with the original, then the remake. The original is a nice blend of Sierra and Lucasarts styles- you can die like in Sierra games and the puzzles are typically on the more difficult side (though not as bad as the infamous reverse Rumplestiltskin puzzle), but you can't get permanently stuck by not picking up the right item, and the humor is very reminiscent of Lucasarts. The graphics hold up quite well, and the animated style of the characters is pleasant, if sometimes at odds with the more violent parts of the story. The attention to detail in the dialogue is far beyond what you'll find in other adventure games- show an item to a different character and you'll almost certainly get a unique (and often quite amusing) response, rather than the usual bland "nope" response from your protagonist. The characters themselves have loads of personality, and are very well voice-acted, making it a delight to chat with them, though they almost overshadow your main character, George, who is fairly bland, but enough of a likeable jerk that you want to see him succeed in his quest. The remake is disappointing on every level. The graphics are blurry and the colors seem dark and muddy compared to the original, the added journal system is boring and unnecessary, the character portraits are dead-eyed and ugly, and large optional chunks of the game have simply been removed, giving you less to explore and interact with- inexplicably, talking to characters about objects sometimes results in a "nope" from George instead of unique dialogue ALREADY PRESENT in the original game, and many clickable spots have been removed if they're not directly used in a puzzle. The game has been dumbed down severely, making the puzzles simpler, making clickable spots glow blue, and making it impossible to die. The puzzles that have been added are mostly busywork, though the door puzzle and the substitution ciphers in Nico's sections were fairly enjoyable.

BS: SoT Director's Cut Review

BS: SoT is an adventure game developed by Revolution Software, whose previous titles include Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky. The Director's Cut adds several new elements, such as animated portraits, interaction markers, a hint system and an extra chapter from Nico's perspective. You play George Stobbart, an American tourist in Paris who is an unwilling witness to an assassination attempt at a cafe. From there you will start on a journey to discover the truth behind an international conspiracy, aided by a French journalist named Nicole Collard. The Director's Cut adds new details to the story through Nico's chapter. As expected, the player will control both characters through certain sections of the game. The story is interesting, revolving around the Knights Templar and their quest for the sword of Baphomet. The gameplay revolves around solving puzzles by talking to people and interacting with objects and the environment. Nico's extra chapter adds some interesting and difficult puzzles, some involving cryptology. The player is advised to use the integrated hint system if he encounters difficulties. Solving each puzzle offers a satisfaction found only in the adventure game genre. This being an enhanced version of the original, the overall presentation of the game is improved, graphics and sound included. Although some of the new additions, such as the animated portraits or the interaction markers, add almost nothing to the original experience, the hint system does manage to help the player when needed. This game is recommended for gamers who like to dabble in puzzle solving while enjoying an interesting story. It might even serve as an introduction to the adventure game genre for new players, provided they have the patience required for such a game. GOG offers both the original and the Director's Cut at a reasonable price, along with manual, wallpaper and more. The Grand Master says go buy it. Five explosive accordions out of five.
