If you're a fan of 90s FPS you should definitely pick this up. The port has been patched and is quite faithful to the DOS version. This includes all the expansions along with online multiplayer.
It works great, looks great and most importantly is a quintessential 90s FPS.
Since the last update the game runs smoothly, no crash when loading or saving and the framerate is stable. Now the question is: is it still enjoyable by today standards? I played a little bit of Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior but always prefered Doom and Quake.
So this is my first time blaying Blood... and I'm amazed by how good it is! Everything is great: the gory goth art feels like those 80s horror movie (Brian Yuzna, Dario Argento, Joe Dante...) it's a delight, every weapon handles differently and has a purpose but the greatest thing about Blood is the level design: tons of secrets, paths, you can jump on roofs with special boots, use the dynamite to open cracks in walls... Exploring in this game is so enjoyable and the gloomy atmosphere really adds up to the fun.
So yes Blood Refresh is an excellent port of a classic to the modern era and it holds up very well. It looks dated of course but the modern controls and support of high res makes it feels like any modern FPS, just like Brutal Doom. Good work NightDive!
There isn't much I can say that hasn't been said already. Ever since Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior received their modern versions (Megaton and Redux respectively) I've been waiting for Blood to go through the same treatment. Years passed and hope gradually disappeared, but it's finally HERE! The Fresh Blood release is as close to perfection as possible. Sure, some details are missing or different here or there, but fixed problems (mouse support), added features (proper 3D view), the ease of use (multiplayer sessions being easy to setup) are more than worth buying this iteration.
Blood has aged much better than I would have expected it to. Even now, in 2019, it's as fun to run and blast through as ever. Proper port for modern systems also means improved performance, which is always a plus. I am also glad that the dev team works hard to improve the title even post-release - since the launch there have already been a few patches which fixed major problems and not even one month has passed.
There is literally not one bad thing I can say about this version. If you're a Blood fan, go get it. Easy 5 stars from me.
What's its got going for it:
- Plays smooth under DX11, Vulkan or OpenGL but I see no difference
- Most everyone knows that the MIDI music is better than the CD Music but to each their own. Turn off CD Music and the MIDI soundtracks play pretty close to what you expect form Sound Canvas VA
- True to the original game. Textures look original.
- If you don't already have the original BLOOD, the original DOS version using DOSBox is included as a goodie!
What's not so great:
- Cryptic Passage is not a separate choice from the menu. It is under user maps and you select the specific level you want to play
- Second level of Cryptic Passage has texture issues. Road is some flashy moving wierdness, textures are all wrong at the theater.
I personally like using NBlood with the original DOS files but you do need to know how to play MIDI music properly using external methods like VirtualMIDISynth. If you don't already have BLOOD, the original DOS version is included as a goodie!
If Night Dive adds Cryptic Passage as a choice from the main menu and fixes some texture issues, I think its a great port. I had no sound issues like some have mentioned.
Hi Everyone i got an achivement that only 4% of players have completed the add on to the original game so i thought i would let everyone know that you go into options in the menu then manage addons and select criptic passage and load it that how you can access it to play, i figure at 4% alot of player may have not realized the game including an expansion.
