I never got the opportunity to play this game, as I was just a kid, around 7 years old, and the only thing I had was an old nintendo. When I got older I finally built my gaming pc, and mostly to try out old games I never got a chance to play. Doom, with mods made it an amazing experience. Then started seeing other build engine games and ran into this game. Wow, so awesome to play this game. And the amount of quality in it! I have only passed the first 2 levels and already got more hrs into it than more modern games these days will give you at a 60 dollar price tag. So far my favorite level is the first chapter, very fun, and full of creativity.
Blood is seriously one of the most stylish and unique games of its era, and one that absolutely deserves its status as a cult classic.
It is to horror movies what Duke Nukem is to action flicks. Pitting you against armies of zombies and gargoyles, Blood is fueled by pop culture references but still manages to feel like its own thing thanks to its beautiful soundtrack, creepy aesthetic, and sense of dark humor. The excellent level design also helps: great care has been put into the environments so that each place you visit looks different from the last and feels lived-in.
The gory, unsettling atmosphere is complemented by great action and satisfying gunplay… Although to be honest, not everyone will like it. Blood has its share of annoying enemies (those damn spiders) and is hard even on low difficulty modes: gun-toting cultists hide behind every corner and can deplete your health in an instant, so do not hesitate to indulge in shameless save-scumming! The gameplay is an “acquired taste” and definitely becomes a lot more enjoyable as you progress.
The combat of the game indeed has a rhythm to itself, and once you get the gist of it you’ll have a great time with the numerous weapons put at your disposal. Yup, Blood fully lives up to its name, and somehow got away with amounts of sadistic violence most modern games won’t approach: the devs were VERY creative with the weapon roster, and you will constantly dismember, explode, burn, melt, electrocute and send flying your opponents in what remains one of the most satisfying display of nineties brutality!
As for this remaster: I think it’s a bit rough since it has glitches and bugs on occasion and lacks some features, such as texture filtering… but it’s good enough, and I’m glad it exists to introduce Blood to new players. The original game is included as a bonus download anyway, so I would recommend the BloodGDX sourceport over this version. Whatever you choose, Blood is a classic that deserves your time and attention!
Arguably the best Build Engine game (Duke Nukem 3d, Shadow Warrior, etc.) that's a love letter to the horror film genre. Unique set of weapons (dynamites, flare, flamethrower and more) one of the best FPS shotguns, great visuals, great one-liners, great music, and very hard.
Even if you're someone coming from games like Doom, Quake and Duke this game is much harder than those respective base campaigns. It all stems primarily from one set of enemies: the cultists. The cultists are hitscanners that have good damage and, more importantly, insane reactions. If they see you, even a pixel of your sprite, they are instantly on you. Prepare to play this game differently than you would a game like Doom. Design-wise I think the cultists are too much they really need tweaking but the game has so much style and I love a good challenge it's hard not to love Blood.
Port works great. Much better than dealing with DOSbox.
Shadow Warrior has beautiful environments and charmingly jank puzzles. Duke has the best movie references. Blood has truly impressive looking set piece battles, huge maps that encourage exploration and have shortcuts that cross through the map in a natural feeling, useful way. I would even go so far as to say that Blood is Dark Souls 1 tier in terms of how these handy shortcuts open up the maps.
The combat is absolutely explosive both in terms of fun and the quite literal. You start the game blowing the ever-living hell out your enemies and it doesn't let up until the end of the final episode.
I have over 180 hours on this Fresh Supply collection and I've only completed the entire game/add-on content once (Well Done skill), and i'm now on E2M7 of my appallingly brutal custom difficulty.
If you're a fan of the greatest, most fast paced, secret-filled and humour laden FPS games the genre has to offer...how can you even say that if you've not played this incredible game?
I'm sure you've at least seen the praise for this dynamite game that some legendary youtubers have posted, and...it's all entirely true.
No need to thank me for the advice and have fun blowing a crowd of cultists into quivering, fleshless parodies of the human body with an appalling violence...but trust me, with how hard these enemies are, you will not pity them in the slightest, and delight in reducing them to the molecular level.
What makes this game pale in comparison to Duke Nukem 3d and Shadow warrior is the fact that the maps were designed specifically to waste your time.
Enemies are placed in corners and behind obstacles so that you won't see them - and once you enter the room they will melt you with their hitscan weapons in a tenth of a second.
This means that in order to clean out rooms, save scumming is what you are gonna do. If you like that, it is fine. I like the approach that Duke and Shadow Warrior took in which enemies were roaming around in the room, idk jackin off, and once you enter the room they become aware of you and start shooting.
And even then you kinda had the time to change guns in the middle of the firefight - which is a luxury you don't have in blood.
Every room is a trap, enemies are hidden and if you only set foot into a room for 0.5 seconds you are dead.
You need to know enemy positions ahead of time or save scum. It is frustrating. Play Duke instead.
