Description
Block’hood is a neighborhood-building simulator that celebrates the diversity and experimentation of cities and the unique ecosystems within them. Budding city planners will have access to 90+ building blocks to arrange and combine and to create unique neighborhoods and discover the implications of their designs. The game will embark on a story of ecology and understanding as additional resources are always needed to unlock new blocks, configurations, and combinations to create more prosperous neighborhoods. Throughout the design process, players will need to avoid the decay of their city blocks by making sure each unit doesn’t run out of resources and become a strain on the complimentary units around them.

Envision Your Neighborhood: Consider what Blocks are necessary for your neighborhood to thrive. There are no boundaries of what you can create with an expanding library of 90+ blocks.

Generate Resources: Each Block you create has inputs and outputs and by understanding how each block is dependent on other blocks, you can create a productive network. Optimize your production and generate abundant resources for the dozens of intricate symbiotic relationships in your neighborhood.

Avoid Decay: If blocks don't receive the inputs they need, they will decay over time and slowly become abandoned or destroyed. Once a block is abandoned or destroyed, you will have to remove it and avoid it from making other blocks decay further. Be careful as seeking an utopian neighborhood carelessly, can lead to dystopia.

Unique Modes: Neighborhood designers an enjoy Sandbox Mode and Challenge Mode with modes for Education and Research planned for educational and academic use within the classroom.

Kind of like SimTower, but 3D

Block'hood is underrated. It's more complex than your average city builder. What makes it unique is that structures don't have up-front resource costs: instead they have inputs and outputs toward your stored resources. Those with insufficient input will decay. Simple to learn, tricky to master. It's a refreshingly transparent system compared to the more "black box" mechanics of other popular city-builders, which often require a FAQ/walkthrough to fully comprehend. As a result, this one is incredibly satisfying once you finally work out how to build an elaborate city that doesn't decay. I compare it to SimTower because, minus all the elevator stuff, you're basically doing the same thing: building a vertical city. Except there are dozens of resources and hundreds of structures, which can make for quite the steep learning curve. Seriously - it's one notch below Dwarf Fortress. Maybe harder, especially if you just jump straight into a sandbox game. Best to start with the story mode, which functions like a tutorial campaign. Alternatively, the Challenge mode also progressively introduces you to increasingly complex configurations of buildings to inspire the basis of more advanced designs. Highly recommend spending plenty of time with both before moving on to the open-ended gameplay.

Promising, but needs love from devs

I bought the game a few months ago, in part because I saw the developer saying they were gonna take it again and start fixing things, but the truth is there were no more updates since those in November (time when the developers said they were gonna take it again). We're in February already, and no more updates were published, although they said that some minor updates were already coming. There's also another thing that really bothers me: there's a specific VR version, with different updates. The VR version does NOT have the latest two updates from November... The game is fun and promising, but it has some bugs and a lot of things seem like they're just not finished.

Feels unfinished

The concept of the game is pretty straight forward and engaging. You build a small neighbourhood (more like a small city) block by block while managing the input/output of a variety of resources like fresh air, water, food, clothing, money, etc. Some resources are a production chain and depend on the presence of other resources that you need to build up. There are some limitations but overall you can build whatever/however you want. The idea is to build a vertical, self-sustaining, functioning community. Something about building your "hood" feels satisfying and you can play story, challenges, sandbox, or sandbox with resource management. The reason I'm giving this game 3 stars is because it feels like it was abandoned partway through development. The UI is clunky and a number of basic features are missing - ie., can't toggle day/night cycles (which is more annoying than in seems) or remap your hotkeys. There is also a sound settings menu that resets itself whenever you start a new game. There aren't really tooltips and if something isn't working the only way to figure out why is through trial and error. The game modes also have some issues. In sandbox with resource management, you will find yourself consistently doing very quick micromanagement - there are probably about 50 resources total and if you run out of one (including waste products), buildings dependant on that resource will quickly start to decay (no function until repaired), creating a chain reaction. You have to catch problems quickly or your whole hood falls apart. The only way you'll know if something is wrong is by keeping a constant watch on your resource bars. In true sandbox mode they took out the resource requirement and decay on the backend, but the game still grays out buildings that you don't have resources for - and since you can't turn off day/night cycle, when it gets dark it's really hard to see. Also could use more variety of blocks and colors. Overall not bad but a bit subpar.

A Brilliant City Builder

This game is a brilliant city builder, and I regret listening to the few negative reviews and not buying it sooner. If you enjoy city building and resource management, then you should defiantly give this game consideration. It focuses on building a small city, with a strong community focus. Imagine trying to build a small, self contained ecosystem, with each building consuming some resources and producing other positive and negative outputs. You need to find ways to maximise the positive outputs, while dealing with the negative outputs. For example a supermarket makes inorganic waste. This waste can go through an incinerator, but that produces pollution. Another solution is not to build supermarkets, but rely on small farm stalls to sell produce. Farm stalls don't produce inorganic waste, but they have other drawbacks. The game uses a global pooled resource system, and doesn't use "walkers". The UI for the resource pool can be confusing in the beginning, but once you get used to it, it is actually very intuitive. Lots of water is good, while lots of waste is bad; just because they are both positive figures, doesn't mean you want them both accumulating in your city. So far I've encountered no bugs. The game worked perfectly on my Linux system. Try it!

One of my house games

The game opens with a tutorial that explains the mechanics in an easy way to understand it but can get quite complex the more you progress To relax you have the sandbox mode where you can build without worring about resources and just to stop for a minute and admire the beauty of both graphics and music I come back from time to time just to build something in sandbox mode and admire the structure and its ineficiency
