Blade Runner

Wow, this is an unexpected blast from the past. I had this game once upon a time around 2001, perhaps even earlier: 1999-2000 time-frame maybe. I remember what apartment I was in when I played it. I think I stayed there for two years. And yes, it was around ~2000. Blade Runner. Of course I bought this on a whim because of the film. I didn't know Westwood. I didn't know if it would be good. I only know that I saw it and thought to give it a try. I suppose this sort of thinking harkens back to a time when I was excruciatingly uneducated about such things, (to give you an example of how many people think now). I just bought it, but I remember that I finished the game. I remember that it was very beautiful, a little long to play, but worthwhile. and that's all I remember. The game is such a love letter to the film itself. It faithfully recreates the world down to the lighting, the sounds, they even have a long Vangelis piece of music that I am convinced is not Vangelis, but some studio musician, hired to create a 5 minute piece of ersatz vangelis that sounds as close to the original as possible. And its beautiful as well. The craziest part of the game for me is standing on the balcony of his apartment. This is the part I remember from TWENTY YEARS AGO. More than anything from the game. In fact its the only thing I remember from the game excepting my general overall impression of it. There is this part, where you walk around your apartment. There really are relatively few options available to you the player which to guide the in-game character. You can go to bed, use your photo machine, go to the bathroom, feed your dog and that's about it. One of the things you can do is walk out and stand on your balcony. It is an utterly pointless gesture. There is NOTHING out there for you to do. Nothing whatsoever, except to stand, and listen to the rain and view the city in all of its hauntingly beautiful dystopian acid-rainy dream-like nightscape. So good.

The game draws on both the movie and the book — though moreso from the movie — which the movie was based on, pleasing fans of both, though I was a little let down by the voice-casting of Gaff. I wish the game had a subtitle, making it more distinguishable from the movie itself, but no matter. It plays out like a good detective game but doesn't seem to have some of the usual trimmings of an adventure game, such as choosing pieces of dialogue and using objects on one another, so there isn't so much puzzle-solving as there is just inspecting and exploring. With multiple possible endings, writing and referencing walkthroughs for this one can be a bit of a challenge, but it is no doubt a great game for those wanting to further immerse themselves in the fictional world of 'Blade Runner'!

I played this game for the first time in 2020, and speaking as a long-time Blade Runner the movie fan, I was not disappointed. The game captures perfectly everything I loved about the movie. This is what I would imagine a proper Blade Runner sequel should feel like; in fact the story runs parallel to the movie plot, so there are plenty references to it and it's fun to interact with some of the movie characters as well. So thumbs up from me, it's a great game--not a 'great game for a 1990s game', just great game, period.

As good as I remembered when I played it the first time, one of the very few games I played in one session (back then when it was possible without commitments) overnight, what an adventure it was, great game without illogic puzzles, just pure investigation! I did not get the "enhanced" as it is a poor job, although the original assets were lost so not much they could have done but upscaling. The fact that this pearl can still be played today it is outstanding, if you like a good game you have to play this, you won't need to look for guides or combine items that would not make any sense, once again it is pure investigative gameplay and an eye for details when scouting areas. Graphics have their own style even looking at them today, a sort of "voxel" like cyberpunk, not too different than what Cloudpunk offers (another good, recent, game if you like the settings). Thank you for the team that brought this back to be playable!

You People Wouldn't Believe ... and that is Blade Runner from Westwood appearing on GOG. Hands down one of the best movie adaptations of all time and one classic adventure game. They did pretty much everything right, hit all the right notes to reach the level of atmosphere the movie had. This is a true classic of the 90s. If you are a fan of the movie, there is no question nor doubt here, BUY THIS NOW !!
