Bad delivery
Where do I start? Heard about this game, my sister got it and we played through the four games together; barely. First off we had a bad misconception about what Joey would be like by the first games art; he looked like an older, Humphrey Bogart-esque kind of character; then he talked and that's where the whole series fell for us. Joey is not likeable. It's not just the voice which we thought sounded grating, but his character is useless, He dosen't serve much purpose other than to make a few comments to the main lead which hurts the game because there was no chemistry between the two not even as friends; they had banter but no real depth. The relationship feels forced, literally! As a ghost, he can never leave her alone, not even for some privacy. This is due to the creepy fact that if any of the Blackwell's decided for themselves they didn't want to be a medium and shut him out; their basically cursed; Joey is a parasite. He didn't serve much as humor relief either; maybe it's just me but I don't find constant snark and insulting zingers to be all that funny. He'll talk Noir style on unrelated issues and clam-up on interesting ones; very frustrating. Which brings me to the other issue, the dialogue. The constant semi-cussing and lewd remark felt awkward and took me out of the experience. The game tries so hard to be Noir at a cost of making characters unrealistic for the sake of talking like a gumshoe. This was on-top of amateurish voice-acting. I got tired of hearing the same voice, bad accents and dead-pan acting through all the games. As a whole the series feels poor; while graphics, music and game play were good despite some interface glitches; the overall writing is unpolished. Whatever good idea they may have had, they should have just skipped making five short games and focus on one really good one; with better acting, writing and characters.
