At launch time, I gave the game 3 stars for good game-play, but stuttering performance.
Well, the performance issues, while not completely resolved, have been improved a lot: the save-game management is better and wait time for animations can be adjusted. And the game-play is still good enough that my company is on day 3789 (10 in-game years and change, but who's counting?)
My only complaint at this point is that there isn't enough to do that I haven't done before, but I've been playing regularly since launch. And, oh yeah, expansions are coming.
To be clear, this game is an acquired taste. It (probably) helps to be into strategy games and giant robots. But if that's your inclination, this game is worth your money.
I was looking for a Battletech experience that gave me the feel of the original game without the time consuming play and this game delivered that for me. Not being a player-versus-player kind of guy, I needed a single player game that challenged me without penalizing me for being old, slow, or not so quick on figuring things out! I have played the campaign game twice through and am on my third go around. The combat is fast enough for me (although there are ways to speed it up) and I have learned some of the difference between the easy mode and the normal mode. Once I feel my oats I might try even more difficult levels! For me, however, it was discovering how Battletech was designed to deliver a connected tale of battles, without needing to resort to a mass combat action, that would allow four warriors of combat machines to grow as characters and impact world actions! I certainly did not feel the game story was derivative, it had plenty of surprises and lots of different challenges! It showed how there was more to the game than just blowing the enemy mechs up! This gave you a chance to escort, carry a key figure, take out an enemy commander, and blow up defended buildings and then escape before the enemy came and overwhelmed you. Additionally you got to deal with incomplete information and enemy ambushes! And all those were just the stock battles!
Of course you also get to redesign the Mechs to taste - and live or die with the result. Do you cut down on endurance to add armor? Do you remove weapons for speed and melee advantages? Which weapons can I put on this Mech design and which ones should I put on? Even the question as to use Jump Jets or no - and at what cost. In short, I love the game design, gameplay, and story line!
I have been a BattleTech/ Mechwarrior fan since the 80's (yes, when it was a table top RPG) and I love this game. If you're a Battletech fan then you will love this game too. I promise.
The story is well written and the game play is pretty intuitive. The game includes various "snippets" of Inner Sphere lore and has a lot of information to add depth to the story. There are quite a few "mechs" to accumulate and all of them have multiple ways to outfit their armament to shred enemy mechs of all sizes.
The game progresses pretty quickly and the challenge can be changed from fast and easy to slow and begrudgingly difficult depending on how much "realism" you want from your game. You can make the game easier to the point that you will never (almost never) have a MechWarrior killed in combat or have a mech completely destroyed or you can set the difficulty on hard and expect to hire mechwarriors and buy new mech salvage continuously to replenish your quickly depleting reserves of both.
There are numerous terrains and "biomes" in which to wage war in and some biomes can have environmental effects on your mech from hindering and aiding heat dissipation to affecting movement speed and stability. The graphics are really well done and add to the game play substantially.
All in all, I gave this game a 5-star rating because it's the best Battletech/ Mechwarrior game I've played ( I've not played any of the 5+ Mechwarrior games for the PC, so there's a bit of bias here) and I recommend it to anyone looking for a giant robot battle strategy game.
It's fun, entertaining, definitely instills some nostalgia of the table top miniatures game, and is a great game to start learning about the Battletech/Mechwarrior universe.
Now, when can we expect Battletech: Clan Invasion to release? Sign me up!
Its been a while since Cyberstorm released late 90s. Just like that game the Battetech universe offers giant mech combat in turn based mode. Mech commander was great, but did not alllow you to pause and think about your strategy. Mechcommader 2 was better but was too short. I love the unlimited randomly generated missions of Battletech. With all the bugs fixed in the expations, its a masterpice. So many mech choices, mechwarrior skils, ship upgrades, urban environments and different faction missions, it has held my attention for over 100 hours with a 3rd career.
This is more of a slow burning, immersive experience of a game than anything else. It is easily the best game I played in 2018. There are plenty of times when you might want to skip ahead or speed through something you've done but the game doesn't let you trivialize it. You fly with the ship in space, walk with the mechs on the ground, and in all ways are along for the ride the whole time. It burns slow and builds to the end. It doesn't captivate with flashy lights or mind numbing action, and it doesn't disappoint like those either. It has a feel of 'Firefly' in fringe, wild west, space setting and stringed instrument music. As a long time fan of the old MechWarriors this was quite different but fully satisfying. I could wish for more of the campaign, more story, more voiceovers but I couldn't fault the game for anything as a top entry in today's overfull market
