After playing BG3 so much for 1000+ hours my friend convinced me to try out BG1 (and eventually BG2) and I absolutely love it! "Go for the eyes, Boo! Graargh!"

Subjectively Very Good
Really, four and a half stars. What exactly makes it good? This is subjective, but the atmosphere and mood matter and there are many fine touches that contribute to the feeling of being on the road in a mysterious setting. The wilderness music, especially at night, is sparse but sets the tone well. The graphics are simple but look good and always will. After you flee from the mysterious group who wants you dead, you can pick your direction. The game is very open about letting you access most of the maps right away and if harder enemies come after you, you will probably be able to run away unless they have ranged weapons. Exploring is how you will find allies, equipment and quests, or you can just stick to the path outlined for you by your foster father. The majority of content in the game, from wilderness areas to the 7? taverns of Baldur's Gate and so much more, is not essential. Once you have some equipment, a few levels, and some companions (you can have up to five) you will no longer be a vagabond but will be able to actively hunt for the mysterious organization that wants you dead. The game starts feeling much different as you start crushing enemies instead of having to run away from them. Companion dialogue is sparse while still contributing to the mood. There are some good lines and they are well voiced. If you want more dialogue there is a mod for that. This game has an active and accomplished modding scene to change the game almost however you want. Loretakers by Acifer, Gorgon's Eye by TotalMilk90, Black Hearts by A-Wizard-Did-It, Shades of the Sword Coast by Lava Del'Vortel, and many more provide higher quality quests than the base game. Mods such as Sword Coast Stratagems or Tactics Remix add heavier combat and more encounters. The modding scene has been focused on the EE version for quite awhile now, so I think it's safe to say that it is now the one to have for mods. You are able to get a tremendous pile of content, some of it of amazing quality, for free, and the amount keeps growing. Things I didn't like: The way this game handles pickpocketing is atrocious and lazy. If you are caught, everyone nearby simply becomes an enemy, possibly breaking the game if they were an essential plot character. Gorion, your foster father who risked his life to raise you, will murdur you with a lightning bolt for the minor issue of trying to pick his pocket. Haste is overpowered, Protection from Undead scrolls are overpowered, Boots of Speed are overpowered, there are indeed some balance issues. The ability to zoom in: Who cares about this? Was it really worth upping the graphics requirements so much from the original just for this?
