Research before buying which version

This game is very well written, brillantly complex with is leveling and attention to detail, but upon booting up the first Avernum game, I could not get past the annoying movement system. I felt that moving around was the most challenging part of the game and seeing its a game you can spend 60 plus hours on, I was not about to invest myself into this choas. I DID however get the newer version of the first game and found it easier to get past and am enjoying it very much. I realize only the first 3 games have reboots/remasters so I have a fear of when I reach Avernum 4 it may end up being a huge drop off in quality of life aspects that the newer ones spoil me with, but I really couldn't do it. I tried and am a big fan of older games, but when it takes me 10-15 seconds to manage to get my character to go through a door, its too much. My suggestion is to look at YouTube to compare the different versions, because the creator of this game is a very witty and wonderful person, but some pros and cons to each version should be accounted for before purchasing.

Deep n' charming

This review is based on the first Avernum game but, as with the Geneforge series, they are pretty similar and riff on the same world/mechanics etc. My first minutes were disheartening because the animation-less movement and sliding about the map can feel like you're playing something very low quality. However, perseverance paid off. You visit settlements, explore them, talk to NPCs, buy stuff, fight stuff, explore the more dangerous corners of the map and quietly get sucked into a very rewarding (if gentle) RPG experience. Combat is turn-based and surprisingly enjoyable for it; the mix of easy-to-use magic and (I thought) forgiving death system keeps it fun. You always risk one more combat, even if you think it might be outside of your skill level and are rewarded for doing so. Levelling up is satisfying (via training grounds, so you can accumulate the points from several levels before spending them) and the storyline is a fun tapestry of direct information and subtle hints. The game reward the curious and there are tons of little side quests / events /characters that you can miss if you rush through but, doing so will give you a thinner, less satisfying experience. In the end I liked the aesthetically simple approach. Hope I've got the mental stamina to play through the whole series.

Story over graphics

If you ever wished you could play a fantasy novel, this is your game. It may sound weird, but only until you start playing. If you want to dive into a world and get involved, this is the perfect game. If you want superb graphics, this isn't the place. Each game is huge (think Skyrim huge), with hundreds of characters, quests, dungeons, and so forth. You control a group of four adventurers, each of which can be built from scratch or from templates. There is a nice over-arching plot to each game, and a variety of major characters that get involved. There is variety in the quests and no two dungeons are the same. That isn't a tagline; no reused cave templates here. Attention to characters makes this game different. For example, a quest may want you to go kill a nephil chief, but the character who gives it to you is a fort commander chaffing under her orders in a remote post, angry with her soldiers' lack of hope, and puzzled over the appearance of dozens of unbreakable magical barriers. You aren't going after the chief because the game said to; you are going after him because an interesting and unique character wants you to. It is this attention to detail and background that make this series unique. I've played other RPGs with a better plot (though not many). I've played others with a similar scope, or similar mechanics. But I've never seen one with the attention to individual minor characters. It really is like reading a series of novels, except you are playing a game.

Endless Entertainment Since I was 15

My first ever Mac/PC game was Angband. My second was Avernum, which I played more than any other game to date, and I'm only referring to the very first game! I've played all of the sequels over and over as well. Spiderweb is my favourite company, and Avernum, my absolute favorite series. If they keep shelling out the games, I'll play them till the day I die.

Great series

I don't know how many hours I've lost playing Spiderweb's games, I seriously lost count after the first few (way back in 1996!?). Loads of content to nugget out, plenty of caverns to explore. The interface and combat system takes a bit of getting used to, but once that happens, you're good. The only complaint I've really ever had, was Avernum 4's everything-on-the-same-level-towns-too-close-together thing. And the chitrach slog, oh the chitrach slog, how I hate thee. Everything else, I'd give more thumbs up if I had more thumbs.....
