Not for the Casual Gamer
Well done old-style game for the player who likes challenging combat along with a somewhat interesting story. But even in Casual mode can be frustrating for others. So if this is your kind of thing fine, but others beware.

Dumbed down exploration
Locations that were mythical in the original game are now right there plainly indicated, possibly with a big fat quest marker, on a world map which spoils a lot of the discovery and the mystery. If you have the willpower to resist every clicking the world map button or using the W key, you can perhaps have the original experience. Except there's no guarantee that any revised dialogue still gives you sufficient pointers to navigate with no map, as it used to. There's also the addition of a fast travel system (from fixed locations, Morrowind-style) which feels out of place in this low-magic world and contributes in making the world feel smaller and less dangerous. RPG system was slightly dumbed-down as well, with new restrictions such as max 1 skill point per skill per level making it harder to fix a character later down the line. You can't close doors anymore, because the poor, poor iPad gamers were closing them accidentally! And speaking of controls, yeah you have full mouse controls but the tile right above your character is a royal pain to click. So basically, that leaves you with improved graphics, support for higher resolutions and a somewhat improved UI as the main selling points over the original.

Casual sightseeing session
Pros: - quite large map - interesting setting - many quest - sandbox (go where you want, do what and when you want) - quite rich descriptions creating nice atmosphere Cons: - you see all the skills, spells, traits that can be learnt from the very beginning - crafting is boiled down to providing alchemists with herbs for them to crate potions I can't say that this game is bad, but apart from interesting initial few hours when I was learning how things work, there was no other encouragement to keep playing than curiosity about how other parts of "underworld" look like, and what writers prepared for me. If discovering lands of this original little universe is enough to keep you in front of screen for many hours that you will need to accomplish this game you will have nice smooth ride and really stress-less adventuring session. If you like digging a lot in you character statistics, discovering new powers throughout the game, feeling satisfaction from your ingenuity in building your own class, hoarding tons of junk to make them into powerful gear you won't find it here. Remember that you can always download the demo (http://www.avernum.com/avernum/) that gives you a decent part of the world-map to explore and make up your own mind about this game.

Ive never heard of this game before. And am having a blast. Simple, fun, nice old school graphics and gameplay. And i love it. I love this game. <3
