Diamond in the rough

Never heard of this before, but it was cheap so I bought it. When I first started playing it, I had a very hard time. I made a couple wrong choices and very quickly found myself at a point where I could not even continue the game. I found very little help online to see what I was doing wrong, and was close to giving up. However, the game falls in the group of the type of game I would like, so I really wanted to play it. I decided to start over again, and I made some different choices, then was able to continue on. Very quickly I started realizing the flow of the game, and it started getting easier to play. I am somewhere around mid game right now and I am still loving the game. I love turn-based combat, and I think this one does it very well. I recommend the game, and my main advice is if you have trouble, just try a different approach. The game does not lock you into doing things in an exact order, so if you have trouble with a battle, go back to it later.

Unique features that you may like

This game has a pretty unique squad based combat, but it's not enough to carry the game. Namely, you control squads of up to 10 soldiers each (I haven't reached the point where I can have 16 yet), but each soldier takes up a hex. One consequence is only six melee soldiers can surround an enemy at a time. The other is a squad of ten peasants with 5 damage and 9 hp each is still viable against an ogre of 100 damage and 200 hp, The ogre can only hit one peasant per turn, obviously killing him, but the peasants can still do good damage and make up their losses by moving #7-10 into position around the ogre. A group of 10 vikings with 16 hp and 16 damage each will still kick the peasants' ass though. Individual members will try to spread out their damage. I have not seen this mechanic in turn-based tactics games before. On the other hand, there are shortcomings aplenty in the game. Even with fast travel points, there is a lot of slow running around in the game. The graphics are pretty dated, and there are no npcs in the game world with random, fun dialogue. The story is pretty barebones, and there is no voice acting in any language. Beyond the squad mechanic, there is limited depth to the tactics of combat. Units do not have special skills or unusual traits, though some can cast spells. Once you get used to that one unique feature, there is not much else. The price is generally low, but 1C (Fulqrum) has many other similarly low cost games with interesting gameplay and a lot more personality, and voice acting. You may like this game if you like this type of game, but it's hard to see any wider appeal. Oh, and if you find yourself getting game overs in the beginning, do the battle with Thgarr and Kira first. Thgarr dies no matter what you do.

Unforgettable

When first played in 2007, I couldn't believe these detailed units, I re-played this a lot, but only later I noticed the lower detail of the world. This game looks great in many things and unfinished in others: Great: -Units detail: Excellent design even for current standards. -Tactical combat: The turn based strategy system with all creatures shown. -Music: You really feel the Mid-Northern European mythology in it. -The hero in the army: This is always great in a strategy game. Moderate: The plot: Many 'unfinished' games has ridiculous plots, but this one is acceptable. Linear: You have some freedom to do random side quests, but main quest is linear. No respawn: Many people love, others like me, when like a game, want to still a bit more. Unfinished: -The world: It is like play a game from 2000s, acceptable for me. -Simple RPG system: Few stats for hero, combat has no random damage or misses, just critical strikes. -Dialogues: Basic and meaningless. -Interface: Basic, dialogues even for chose item rewards. -One class. You play with the Fighter. There are altars for 2 more classes, the shooter and the mage, but they actually are companions. Seems planned to have 3 playable classes. (There is the stand alone Valkyrie expansion, in which you play the story of Eneya, the shooter). Failures, bugs: -The chests system: The reward grows with your level. So better save them to open at higher levels (I open them all after clear each current area). -Repeat forever one high level combat, by choosing always the same dialogue option, but it's not unbalancing at the end of the game, when you already are very strong. Don’t buy if you want complexity, or a polished game. But if you like turn based strategy, and story driven RPGs, you probably will be amazed by its simplicity and the love shown in each unit.

Simplified Kings Bounty

With "behind the back" view At the start you are underpowered so you have to figure out which combat you have to tackle first. Expect some reloads. But after you have conquered your first castle things become a lot easier and you'll soon be unstoppable. The good: runs on a toaster. Encountered no bugs. Hangs sporadically but no harm done (autosave to the rescue) The mediocre: the environment is 3D but the game is not. You can't climb, jump or walk on a stair. The game engine looks like it was developed in the previous century. No minimap, you will open the map screen A LOT The bad: ranged combat, speed (incl. speed accessories) and direct damage spells (for your character) top everything else. Combat feels a bit TOO simplified but the game took long enough already ... No difficulty settings.

3.5 Stars would be more fitting

Is the game extremely good? No. But it is not bad ether. A fine short game (about 15 hours) to kill sme time with really good tactical combat but the walking passages are often booring.
