The game isn't even close to as engaging, scary or creative as The Dark Decent. It's a constant game of retreating to save int he one save area so you don't lose progress. Zero rewards for searching the map, and the monster is so predictable there are zero scares.
I love Frictional Games. The Bunker was a bit of a letdown.
It's a good game. I enjoyed my time with it. It's spooky, great atmosphere and sound as usual. The inclusion of a few weapons was cool.
Unfortunately there is essentially zero story. Sure, there are notes you find throughout. Maybe it's because I adore SOMA and really enjoyed Rebirth. Between those games I really liked the story and the characters.
The Bunker doesn't have either but it does have more gameplay. So that is a bonus.
I suppose the ultimate reason I thought it was just OK was because I played Alien Isolation. That game is the benchmark for a survival horror where you are being hunted by a monster. The Bunker just can't compete with that masterpiece.
Spent almost an hour bumbling in the dark trying to find my out of the chapel area but I just can't. Literally an hour of crouch walking and exploring every single nook and cranny but I just can't find my way out. Then finally after the monster goes back in the hole for the 50th time, he just decided to come out and kill me again for no reason when I'm being completely silent not even using the flashlight. Almost 2 hours of progress lost for what felt purely do to bad level design, combined with bad AI (monster attacking over and over again for no reason), combined with bad mechanics: no light and more importantly NO AUTOSAVING.
THERE ARE NO AUTOSAVES. YOU WILL LOSE HOURS OF TIME AFTER BUMBLING AROUND IN PITCH BLACK FOR HOURS.
"Use your wits" my ass. There was a blocked up area with an exit sign over it. I roll an explosive barrel on the rubble and throw a grenade to try to escape but NOPE, they didn't think of that one. I have no idea how I even got to the chapel area to begin with but I could not find my way out, and I am not trying again after losing 2 hours. Autosaves have been in games for several decades now. Yes I'm pissed, if you want my money respect my time.
Aside from a few cool sequences and pretty good atmosphere and setting (best part of the game imo), it did not impress me. Main monster's behaviour seemed inconsistent to the point of feeling like a pure bs at times, which just kinda made it a poor man's Alien Isolation for me. It didn't feel like a living, 'thinking' being, but rather a video game entity, that is heavily scripted, spawning at the exact locations that felt convenient to create a specific scenario, and it kinda ruined the game for me.
No Linux version this time, it seems. That alone justifies a low score. Although game runs reasonably well with Wine/Proton at high graphic detail (tested on Lutris with GE-Proton-8.8, on Steam it's certified for SteamPlay), there's an important glitch due probably to emulation. And it is character's hands. There's plenty of captures and videos out there already. Considering you spend a good amount of time with hands visible on screen, it's quite irritating. So I recommend waiting for this to be solved (with either a specific patched Wine version or by developer's intervention) before jumping in.
