Description
'Tis said that long ago peace and tranquility covered the lands. Food and drink flowed freely, man and beast lived in peace, gold and silver abounded – it was the Golden Age of Akalabeth.

Mondain, second born of Wolfgang, a great king of old, wished to gain his brother's inheritance and so he used his great powers for evil, creating deep dungeons guarded by daemons and Balrogs. Now blood flowed freely in Akalabeth, and foul creatures soon came to roam near the surface. Mondain cast such sickness and pestilence upon Akalabeth, that both man and beast lived in constant fear. Thus was the Dark Age of Akalabeth.

There arose from the land a man, pure and just, to battle the Dark Lord. British, Champion of the White Light, did battle with Mondain deep within the labyrinth of dungeons, eventually driving him from Akalabeth forever. British of the White Light was proclaimed Lord British, Protector of Akalabeth. Alas, much damage had been suffered unto the lands. The Revival of Akalabest has begun.

'Tis thy duty to rid Akalabeth of the foul creatures which infest it, whilst trying to stay alive!

  • Developed in 1979, Akalabeth is the first game made by the legendary creator of the Ultima Series, Richard Garriot. 
  • Designed by the teenage Garriot in Applesoft BASIC for the Apple II, Akalabeth is one of the earliest known examples of a computer role-playing game, and is considered by many to be "Ultima 0." 
  • Featuring 10 different monsters, procedurally generated dungeon crawling, and wire frame 3D graphics, Akalabeth was highly advanced for its time and is still widely regarded as one of the most historically significant RPGs ever created.

I forgot how hard this game is...

...somehow, I managed to finish it honestly many years ago, but I can't imagine how. The game was incredibly hard especially compared to today's standards. So, I'm the person that actually wrote the port of this game for the MS-DOS platform in the late 90s. You can actually see my name in the acknowledgements. I got connected with Richard Garriott by total chance and they took me up on my offer to port it from Apple ][ to MS-DOS (for free of course). I was young, a total fanboy (ok I still am), and it was my first year of college, so I jumped on the offer. The original thinking was that it was going to be included in Ultima IX (along with the other games in the series) when the players found what was called the "Book of Ultima" inside the game. Well, the Ultima IX release dragged out and it ended up being distributed in the Ultima Collection instead. At the age of 19, I had something with my name in it sitting on a box in store shelves (back when you could buy video games in boxes). There you had it my one and only foray into the video game industry. What I am doing now? I'm an IT consultant. Lol. This game was build with the hot new DJGPP compiler that all of the newest video games at the time were using. I basically had to learn C++ over night. If the game is buggy for you I apologize, that's probably why. :) If I remember right, if you add a file to the Akalabeth folder named ENDGAME.DAT, you can see the "ending sequence" on the startup menu.

Some Games Don't Age Well

Akalabeth, while historically important, is a game that really isn't very much fun to play today; and was surpassed by titles like Wizardry within a year of its commercial release. It is extremely repetitive and clunky, with very little in the way of tactics or exploration, and is frustrating unless you abuse the use of a certain item. I don't recommend Akalabeth unless you played it as a kid and are feeling nostalgic, or are simply interested in the origins of the Ultima series, but there is nothing in this game that wasn't done far better in Ultima 1. Simply put; it just doesn't compare favourably with most other rpg's.

A historically important RPG-game

From a historical viewpoint, Akalabeth, Richard Garriott's first game, is a real gem for every traditionalist gamer. It shows the very beginnings of everything that lead to the modern CRPG-genre after all. If you are into the history of RPGs, this forefather of the fantastic Ultima-games is a really interesting view into the earliest days of these games. The basics of modern RPGs are here, but everything is still very rough, not very user-friendly and you'll die a lot. I never finished this game, but it holds a strange attraction to me even in these days. I recommend the 1998-version (in the bonus section) as it features (some) colors and background music.

Simplicity at its textiest

When you think about graphical dungeon GUI's such as Might and Magic, you will see the simplicity of point and click your way around the town. In this game, the developer combines the text based adventure genre with very simple vector graphics for it's time and creates a wonderful story that's simple to follow once you read the manual and get a feel for it's text commands. I don't think it would be something kids want to play on Christmas Day especially when they are getting their new video game systems or brand new games under the free but it would be a treat on Christmas to play and when you have nothing else to do. True Nostalgia here. Very impressed with this offering and it's free so why not add it to your account without financial risk?

Old School

I am a product of the modern "go to this point, kill this guy" kind of gaming. As this game is an old school kinda game. Since downloading it I have started 5 games and starved to death 5 times, trying to get used to the whole needing food thing. But if you grew up on these games or want to see what your parents played as kids, this game is totally for you. It make take my a long time to learn how to get food management down, but it will be a long time well spent.
