This is a challenging and fun game. I admit i might be a bit biased, having written the story to the game, but hey, when the halflings can develop Leprechauns, all happiness and joy that one can have in gaming comes to fruition. That and the goblins have a unit called the Big Beetle.
A great game for those of you who like games that will actually take a while to master and win.
Look at the release date. 20 years ago. And this game is still better than half of new strategy games coming out this year. It deserves more than 5/5, it is what you would expect turn-based strategy should be.
Keep in mind that there's no 4k and you may have some tech problems with super-wide monitor.
The game... what can I say? It´s a classic, much like HOMM but different.
Sadly, to get it to work on win11, you need to apply a patch, google "aow showscene". if only gog would apply this automatically, or place a BIG SIGN on the games page.. would have saved me some headache.
Age of Wonders is that one game I always install as soon as I have a new computer. It's art style and music match wonderfully. The game's either a solid challenge, or a relaxing runthrough and the brilliant soundtrack keeps you engaged throughout.
Nowadays though, it's getting harder to get it to run properly. I'd recommend at least:
- Author int19h created the unofficial patch for Age of Wonders 1.36 that tentatively fixes the "Exception during MapViewer.ShowScene" error that can be seen when running AoW on Windows 8 and above, or under Wine on Linux.
- Lagi's Scroll of Swiftness, a utility program which adds extra hotkeys to the game.
The game still has an active community through Discord as well as the AoW Heaven forums. Modern mods (2020+) are still being made and released. Check out: AoW+, AoWx, Ziggurat & Evolved.
Do no be afraid of the aged graphics and User Interface: this game is a true gem of the strategy and fantasy genre.
With an engrossing campaign and a deep gameplay, Age of Wonders is on par with most of the classics like Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Magic and Disciples.
The game is light, cheap on GOG, and is incredibly fun. Once you figure out how most of the mechanics works, you will lose hours, nights long, much like good 4x games make you do.
A must-have in any GOG library!
