A Must for any urban warfare fans.

Well, to begin with, I would say this game has a departure of the traditional Rock-Paper-Scissors gameplay style, this can be seen as Gunships can engage AA units and beat them if manoeuvred correctly, or Tanks can actually crush infantry and even AT units if used well, defensive structures can actually target multiple units with varying degrees of accuracy, lethality and saturation, and base static defenses don't require multiple buildings but actually upgrades and unit combinations, buildings are interactive and allow for diverse and dynamic clearing methods, rather than just a unit with the "clear building ability" and destroyed civilian or garrisoned buildings may continue to be in your way after destroyed as unusable ruins that will have an effect on you path, forests, swamps and bushes can be used to set up ambushes, and units abilities allow for interesting and diverse combinations, also, limited resources will have you questioning if unit spamming is the way to go, superweapons are no longer invincible unless destroyed, but can be countered with specialized units or structures that allow for countermeasures against superweapons, something that C&C lacked, fire support units are varied and you'll have a keen interest on keeping them alive as more experienced units will allow for better results compared to larger numbers that can be easily coutered with enough artillery and splash damage, while methodical and often surgical strikes, can have crippling effects on the enemy's defenses, the game allows for you then, to beat it with a handful of units provided and does not force you to use a specific unit in general to accomplish any given mission, but will offer advice on how to counter evolving threats, par example, in C&C tanks were the absolute worst against any type of infantry, so place enough AT infantry and you're done, here AT infantry has to get some form of cover, or focused tank fire will rip them to shreds otherwise, so mind your playstyle and enjoy!

A good "semi realistic" RTS.

This game is a lot like C&C however it has a lot of twists and often tackles balance problems differently. For one thing the game rewards you for being humane... as in taking prisoners after a fight rather than killing everyone. This brings me to the games biggest twist. You see there are 3 sources of income: Oil - Self explanatory. Oil pump -> Truck -> Refinery Gold - Stationing infantry in banks (It's a pretty nice feature! Allows turning some buildings into fortresses with the right mix of units) lets you tap into its safes. Prisoners - Capturing a prisoner of war not only gives you a bonus cash injection but with hte right reearch it also steals money from enemies. Additionally a prison fully "staffed" also passively generates income (no i have no idea how it works but i would wager on slave labour). So you get some nice diversity with the economy. What about the combat? It's rock paper scissors but again with a twist. You may remember how many times your tank had to shoot infantrymen in games like Red Alert 2 to kill them each shell delivering scratch damage at best? Well it's not the case here because one shell from an abrams pretty much oneshots every infantry unit... however it can't take many kornet rockets in return. And finally airstrikes ships and artillery. You can't control airplanes directly in this game. You can only send them on strafing runs and select the main point you want them to attack. They will then proceed to the target and drop half of their payload on it. The other half is dumped on other targets of opportunity. All in all aircraft are by fat the most powerful and fragile units in the game if you don't count in ships. The expansion pack is a mixed bag. On one hand it overhauls artillery, balances healing units (they were too powerful) and adds mercenaries along with ships but the expansions campaign is punishingly difficult to put it lightly. It's a pretty original (and good) take on the classic RTS formula.

Meh...Its fun...I guess..

This was on sale for 2.99 last month and decided what the hey I'm in the mood for a RTS. This game takes itself very seriously the plot is based on a book by Dale Brown, which if you didn't know, writes Tom Clancy like techno thrillers. I loved that sh$t when I was a kid. Anyway the plot of this game is painful and the voice acting is awful but that's ok its RTS game not an actual novel. Though to be honest I prefer the over the top sillyness of the C&C franchise. The game play right? That's what matters! Well its fun the sequel is pretty challenging with well thought out levels its slightly realistic and the effects look cool. So there are better games out there but if this goes on sale again for 2.99 and you have a crappy laptop and you are sick of C&C generals give it a try. I did and look at me!

Definitely worthwhile

Act of War, despite being nothing original has some mechanics of its own. For example, there are three ways of collecting money to fund your war effort: extracting oil, holding banks, capturing prisoners of war. Soldiers, when badly wounded stop fighting, most vehicles when destroyed leave a crewmember, both can be captured, what gives you small amount of money in the moment of capture and also you receive small amount of money over time, for every prisoner in prison camp. It is kind of weird - you are basically encouraged to create a little “slave camp”, but in the end, it results in a gameplay where letting your units die is heavily punished. Firstly, units get experienced during engagement and therefore get stronger. Secondly, by letting units die you waste precious resources invested in building your army. And enemy will capture your badly wounded soldiers and crewmembers, therefore will get more money and become stronger. Many people compare this game to C&C Generals; however, units in Act of War move faster and die faster. Experienced vehicles can one shot each other. Therefore, it is possible to strike swiftly and destroy a bulk of enemy force. Also infantry can lay ambushes in the woods. Moreover theme is different than C&C Generals - Act of War strives to be more “authentic”, most of the units have real life counterparts and there aren’t any goofy units like toxin tractor. Techno thriller like story, works good with the theme, it justifies usage of various contemporary military equipment and does good job of explaining reasons behind every mission. I’ve enjoyed the add-on, “High Treason” better - campaign has a little bit more plausible story and some missions are challenging. Also I personally had a great time with navy missions, coordinating ships to attack simultaneously in order to overwhelm enemy’s ship anti-missile defenses and positioning my ships, so they could protect each other. All in all, AoW is very solid game, I’ve loved it and I recommend it.

Solid but with flaws

You will know what you get for your money if you have played any post 2000 RTS. The units are for the most part "believable". I like that one of the resources is oil. That gives it a "realistic" feel instead of some magic substance a la unobtanium. The missions in the singleplayer campaign in Direct Action are well balanced, no too easy and not too hard. One flaw in both games are that once you set a rally point from a buildning you have to click on another building or unit to get rid of that mode as you can't press escape to reset. A small oversight but annoying nonetheless. In High Treason the last mission in my opinion is too hard, even on easy. I'm by no means an RTS ace but I've played my fair share of them. Age of Empires Homeworld Battle for Middle Earth Star Wars Force Commander, Galactic Battlegrounds, Empire at War with their expansions Ground Control... Still I could not finish that last mission without resorting to a semi cheat and going another route with my units and avoiding a certain trigger until I had prepared the battlefield. I'd give direct action a 4 and High Treason a 3.
