Solid plaguethrough!
Set in the Kingdom of France during the Hundred Years' War, "A Plague Tale: Innocence" tells the equally compelling and morbid story of young Amicia de Rune and her little brother Hugo, as they are pursued by the Inquisition through a land ravaged by a horrifying blight. Developed by the Bordeaux, France-based Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive, "A Plague Tale: Innocence" proves to be a bit of a sleeper hit that can be easily overlooked in the deluge of spectacular AAA titles. While this game clearly doesn't have the biggest budget in the world and on occasion one can tell that the developers are punching a little bit above their weight, the effort that has been clearly dedicated to this title is absolutely charming, and it soon becomes obvious that "A Plague Tale" is way more substantial than the sum of its parts. The story stretched over around 8 hours of the campaign is amazingly efficient at tying the consecutive challenges and tasks together, the gameplay is varied enough to cover even for the weakest of its elements, and the consistently solid VO work is almost as impressive as the very clever and creative use of music. While this title isn't perfect, it is definitely worth the time of those who appreciate releases like "The Last of Us", "Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons", and "Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice". In other words - 'tis a game worth plagueing!

Hope you ain't afraid of rats!
Wasn't sure what to expect but with the rave reviews I wanted to check it out. The praise was not unwarranted- the game is dark(right from the start, sorry dog lovers), grotesquely beautiful, immersive, and has some great storytelling. I like that you are not some uber-hero, and all you have is a damn sling, and have to protect your (mostly) useless brother the bulk of the time. Sneak is definitely the key here, especially for the first half. I really like the creativity with the rats, avoiding, then using them. Final boss battle was truly some crazy bizarre stuff. Let's just say RATS INTENSIFIES. Only criticism would probably be some of the expressions of characters seem a bit..lifeless. Kudos for the photo mode, I like seeing it without needing something like Ansel.

A good game for certain people
This is a fairly simple, straightforward game which you can tell has had a lot of love put into it. The details in the characters, the voice performances, animations, and sound show a lot of production value even for a "AA" game such as this. I have to say, though, that there are probably many people who won't enjoy playing through this. It's a "cinematic-driven" game that progresses rather slowly, and the parts with the most gameplay can still feel rather hand-holdy (literally, as Hugo is holding Amicia's hand and suggesting what to do next). The stealth mechanics are straightforward at first but do get more interesting as you unlock the ability to light fires, knock out guards, lure rats, etc. which adds a lot of complexity to each encounter. Personally I enjoyed my playthrough and the story, and didn't hit any annoying glitches or really frustrating parts, so I'd say this was worth the money. And if you are looking for another French rodent-based stealth action game (who isn't?) then I actually felt this game was very similar to Ghost of a Tale, which I also enjoyed a great deal.

Fraught stealth
The scene setting is amazing, the world lives, breathes, and dies around you. The drama is fraught with tension and the desire to see what's next held me for an hour or so. However, the gameplay seemed limited to small arena based stealth. I found some scenes tricky (probably because I was impatient when throwing stones to distract guards) and I found redoing a small scene several times really showed me the small box I was in. I felt the game was most enjoyable when my ability was able to carry me throught the scene by the skin of my teeth, first try. A personal note: I left the game for some time and then tried to get back into it. However, I found the subject matter too stressful. IMO this is an acheivement; the nature of encroaching disease and evil, married with two young siblings trying to escape certain death from totalitarian religious fanatics was a bit too intense for me presently. (My kids are the same age and the pandemic is stressful lol) I would reccomend giving it a try.
